We were all set to go to 12 teams the SEC grabs OU and Texas and the brakes got slammed shut and an “alliance“ got formed.

I’m betting those talks start again really quickly with the PAC and B12 demanding one guaranteed spot for each. If not it’s very likely the B1G and SEC come out with their own format.

I’m also betting the Rose Bowl is going to change their selection process in the near future.

There is no doubt that the CFP 12 team format is on. The B1G should have always supported it. They will now for sure as they want all the at-large spots that can be had. And the PAC now needs it more than ever. Plus the Rose Bowl just lost a ton of leverage and they were one of the problems.

actually man.. why even expand it if they are playing a game of RISK? The money screams for a mini conference playoff, and with both conferences recently expanding.. it can work.. then have the winner face the winner of the other conference..

This is the way for them to complete the NFL type playoff..

This would be the best scenario for cfb. Both conferences could add another 4-8 teams then divide them into 4 divisions. Have a conference playoff, then match the conference winners for the Championship.

Leave the bowl games to the rest of the teams to figure out.

yep and they can still schedule games vs each other in OOC matchups

We just need a few more all-SEC title games and then the Playoff will expand. Trust me.

Don't see the SEC / BIG and the other 8 conferences getting on the same page. Most likely the SEC / BIG break-off into there own playoffs

It depends on what happens.

If the B1G stays with what it has (which I believe they will unless ND joins and the ACC is dismantled) then it’s in the SEC and B1G’s best interest to put in the 12 team format and try to keep the ACC viable. In 2036 the B1G and SEC divide up the ACC and then we go to conference playoffs with a championship game.

College football then defacto creates a Division Zero between the SEC and B1G and everyone else will need to create their own system.

I can see it now, the Grandaddy of Them All, featuring the respective champions from the MAC and the Mountain West.
Will they paint the field blue for Boise St.?

In a P2 scenario, how about four divisions per conference and the top team in each division getting an auto bid to the playoffs + 4 P2 at large teams and no conference championship games. Other conferences would do their own thing.

I think they will expand it regardless but I doubt it will be 12 schools. It depends if the SEC/BiG continue to expand in the near future. I can see each conference fattening up it's pockets by creating a mini 4 school playoff within it's conference

I think it goes to 12 with guaranteed spots for PAC, Big 12, ACC and one for everyone else and the other 8 open to best teams. They will wait out 2036 if they have to for the next expansion and then the B1G and SEC will form their own playoff structure.

If the SEC and the B1G stand pat, it all depends on what happens to the PAC. If the B12 picks off some of the PAC, then the PAC may be out. If the PAC stands pat or adds 4 teams like the B12, they will likely keep their AQ bid. The ACC will still get an AQ.

On their Pod, Forde and Wetzel are hilarious on this. However, I don’t agree with them when they said all AQs are gone … the SEC and the B1G won’t agree to it. I still think they will do AQs for the P5, assuming the PAC survives. That still leaves 6 at-large slots which means the SEC and B1G could and should get 4 in each. Now, the top conference champs getting byes … that’s gone for sure.
