I'd find it very interesting if every school had to find out what they are actually worth "on their own" to networks....without any conference affiliation propping them up or bringing them down.
How much would Michigan State be worth?
How much is LSU worth?
How much is Stanford worth?
How much is Texas Tech worth?
How much is NC State worth?
It’s deeper than that because it will change year to year. For instance Michigan was worth a lot more last year than they had been in previous years because people were interested and they had some top rated games which didn’t include Ohio State. Same can be said for Michigan State in that they started undefeated and a Heisman candidate running back at one point.
Texas and OU get great ratings for the RRR and OOC games but other than that it’s spotty.
For the last 3 years the most consistent ratings getters have been:
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Big SEC matchups
As a league the SEC as a whole out performs most everyone else but a lot of that has to do with low competition from Pro teams in SEC country. The team that has been impacted the most by a pro team is Tennessee.
SEC fans are going to watch SEC games because they don’t just want to watch their team they want to scout the others.
Now make Mississippi State or South Carolina an independent team and they are going to struggle. But a Georgia vs South Carolina game is always going to draw a decent rating (not blow the doors off but better than most standard conference games) even when neither is highly ranked.
Competition is a large factor. If you are the first game of the season the audience is going to be much larger than normal, same for Thanksgiving games and conference championships. They just don’t have the competition.
So it’s very subjective and the conference influences it a great deal as well as the time of day.
There is a reason that the B1G puts a lot of big games on at noon and that’s so they don’t go head to head with the SEC. The SEC has better ratings because most of their games are in prime time and usually the best game.
So many factors go into it. Alabama and Georgia don’t get their ratings without being part of the league. They would do better than most but the conference matters.
