Al's is basically the original, I've only been once but it was up there for best. Buona Beef is another local chain that's pretty good, plus there's always Portillo's which is kinda more of the mainstream, tourist-y one but still pretty good. Mr. Beef On Orleans, Johnny's Beef and Jay's are all pretty good I've heard.

Honestly, I've never had a bad Italian beef here. You're never going to be more than like a half mile away from one of those older countertop-style places and any one of those worth their salt is gonna have what you're looking for and some of those honestly have the best food in the city.

Seriously, though, unless you're staying somewhere deep in the southside you'll be fine. Leaving keys in a running car, counting bills out in the open in the train station (or really anywhere in public), people not minding their own business, saying something just stupid to a panhandler, not turning around if you think you're walking into trouble, etc. that kinda stuff. Just keep an eye on the kids if you're going to be on the train underground at night (I've never had an incident but I'd be skiddish if I had a kid with me and they tried wandering off) but the criminal types are also cowards who aren't going to mess with anyone who they think will give them a fight.

Als is the best they say.....never been there,but its been on numerous food channel shows ss bedt in Chitown.....

The other that I eat at freqiently is Portillos....god damn good....the beef and italian sausage combo is kill.......along the giardenera hss the perfect heat.....and you cant go wrong with a Maxwell Street Polish if thats your thing too.....Its a grilled polish with grilled onions and mustard on a poppy seed hotdoog bun.......

Try Ditkas place....Have not been there i probably 12 years,but very good food,plus they have a souvenier shop wiith tshirts,hats and cigars if you are interested.......and a buddy was there one time and DaCoach so happened to be there......Has a pic wih him.....he used to hang out there,but I dont know about his health these days.....

Plenty of places to eat.......but bring lots of cash,it is Chicago.....lol

Lol.....stay away from south side.....US Cellular is getting deep south there.........almost all shootings are gang related and happen in that ares.....


I roofed teo dchools there,both schools haf german shepherds chained to each door during overnight hours.....other than that,you should be safe.....

I live next to the Mississippi River and visited and stayed in Chicago numerous times and have never encountered such even a fight......

Yeah I've been here combined 2.5 years and other than some weirdos here and there on the train I've never even seen anything that made me feel legit unsafe. You really just need to stay out of certain areas that unless you live there you won't end up in anyway, don't go looking for a trouble and just generally don't do anything stupid/exercise discretion and you'll be fine.
