Notre Dame Seeking $75 million/yr from NBC

Telling you.. ESPN has to pay out the remainder of the LHN contract.. Texas can't take it to the SEC but the contract was fully guaranteed. Which was another reason why UT had money to pay it's exit fees.

Edit* Also in regards to ND.. for it to work like UT in the Big 12 w/LHN.. NBC would provide 50 mil a year and the ACC would kick in 25 mil for it's tier 3 games

They're gonna roll the LHN monies into the SEC Network payout and a ESPN+ channel.

If you think ESPN's gonna give tejas a lump sum payout for LHN you're dreaming unicorns.

LOL they still are paying Texas for the remainder of the contract... It's what's guaranteed.. Probably the best thing Deloss did when ESPN gave him everything to not leave to the PAC

Not if you combine Notre Dame's ACC payout.

It's like tejas. When you combine their Big 12 payout with the LHN payout, they are on par with Big 10 and SEC payouts.
And I think OU, Kansas and WVU get decent money from their tier 3 payments don’t they? Don’t think the rest do that hot.

There very few schools who could do this.. UT would be one of them.. but they won't go this route.. playing in a conference vs ark, aggy, and ou every season.. plus matchups vs Bama/UF/UGA mixed in, is good enough

*Money doesn't hurt either :)

This is a good place to ask a question I’ve been pondering. (It may need a separate thread.)

If ALL 130+ plus FBS teams were independent, how much could they get from the broadcasters on their own? Who would command the most?

My opinion is the most recent multi year success teams would get the most… Bama, tOSU, Clem, now Georgia… and ND.

After that it’d be mostly older blue bloods and a handful of new flashy teams. The money would drop off pretty fast after that imho.

OU just signed a deal with ESPN+. That is basically a LHN.

Expect a lot more team specific ESPN+ channels across conferences to carry sports that are not basketball or football. i.e. Only fans of that specific school give a shit about seeing what is basically non-revenue generating content.
For me personally it'll be nice if Nebraska gets one for Husker baseball. BTN does not support college baseball like the SEC Network does.

The SEC just cut a deal with ESPN+ where it'll carry one OOC football game for each SEC team. It'll most likely be their FCS opponent where only the team fans would care to watch the blowout. Before Nebraska joined the Big 10 those were PPV games.

I expect LHN to be converted to an ESPN+ channel as to prevent redundancy with the LHN.

If I were NBC I would not take this deal. Does Notre Dame bring that many eyeballs anymore? I mean I can't see Notre Dame (especially with a new inexperienced head coach, so possibly shaky grounds) vs Air Force, or ND vs Marshall, or ND vs Syracuse, or ND vs Boston College, or ND vs Navy bringing all that much TV revenue. I don't tune into those games and wasn't last year ND games on Peacock?

If NBC feels ND is trying to leverage them, I'd call their bluff and decline this deal. I don't see how it is profitable for NBC.

NBC is absolutely being "leveraged" here.
ND can simply walk in and say "Hey, we can get the $75 million from the Big 10 tomorrow."

Besides being a blueblood, ND gets a lot of Catholic eyeballs nationally. Omaha is a Catholic city, and there are a lot of dual Nebraska/ND football fans here.

Creighton is a Catholic school in Omaha and there are far more Creighton basketball fans in Omaha than Husker basketball fans.

We call them Jayskers because they can be found wearing red from Sept - Nov, then they change to wearing blue from Dec - March.

@Tomhusker is a Jaysker.

Under the newest deal WVU’s third tier deal was worth about 7mm per.
At one point they were between Texas and OU as far as third tier deal income but now, no idea.

This is because Creighton is a better basketball program than Nebraska.

Notre Dame's fanbase is aging. The ND brand isn't as attractive as it was in the late 80's-early 00's. I know many Catholics who are not Notre Dame fans just because of them being a Catholic school. I think that was maybe largely true back in the 70's and 80's when ND was good and they were always on TV, but now with so many games available on TV, people being fans of their regional schools, alma maters, etc. the lure of ND is different.

NBC would be dumb to invest this much money into ND football. Let them go to the B1G and get paid. I'd love to see NBC put that money they'd pay ND into trying to strike an NBA deal because the NBA on NBC was awesome.

Notre Dame is a dying brand and the average Notre Dame football fan age is 65. we're about ten years away from Boston College having as many football fans as Notre Dame

Exactly. I wouldn't invest in this.

What is important to remember here is that neither NBC or the Big 10 want Oregon.

Enjoy your ESPN+ channel.

If I were Commissioner of the NBA, I'd raise the rim 1 foot and line it with razor blades.

The lowest-rated game last year was against GT with 1.45 million viewers. That game ended 55-0, so I even tuned out early. The Navy game was 1.9 million viewers, but again that was another blowout.

The Clemson game will likely get 5-6 million viewers. That alone means a ton. Wouldn't surprise me if Marshall is on Peacock like the Toledo game was last year, so it's hard to get a number of what a game like that would do. I think the BYU game will draw a significant number too. Certainly not a great home slate, but I'd guess, overall, the viewership will be better than last year.
And what about UNLV? HMMM?

By your own definition, your statement is false.
