I know this is going to seem like sour grapes, but it's not. We didn't get Manning, we will be fine.
Prior to not getting Manning, I questioned the "pied piper" effect that he would have no matter where he went. I asked on a UGA board for anyone to name a player that was genuinely a pied piper. The top player mentioned was Justin Fields. 2018 was our first no. 1 class, and it was the third best all time, even after ATM last year. But we really couldn't point to that many players that came to UGA just because of Fields. Most were already leaning toward UGA and that just cemented their choice.
So, what about Manning? Did he really pull all that many good players to Texas? I'll let
@Thiefery provide more depth and context as he knows way more about Texas recruiting than I do. But let's recall that Texas was already able to recruit well:
Per the 247 Composite:
2023 - est. top 5
2022 - 5th
2021- 15th
2020 - 9th
2019 - 3rd
2018 - 3rd
With that in mind, this is what has happened since Manning committed (I've included his HS teammate as that seems the most pied piper player of them all):
| 23-Jun | Arch Manning | | | | |
1 | 27-Jun | Derek Williams | S | 0.9823 | 36 | LA |
2 | 29-Jun | Johntay Cook | WR | 0.9818 | 38 | TX |
3 | 20-Jul | Malik Huhammad | CB | 0.98 | 43 | TX |
4 | 26-Jun | Jaydon Chatman | IOL | 0.9246 | 190 | TX |
5 | 3-Jul | Sydir Mitchell | DL | 0.9164 | 231 | NJ |
6 | 23-Jul | Peyton Kirkland | OT | 0.9049 | 289 | FL |
7 | 26-Jun | Jonah Wilson | WR | 0.9041 | 296 | TX |
8 | 25-Jun | Liona Lefau | LB | 0.8953 | 364 | HI |
9 | 26-Jun | Connor Stroh | OT | 0.8794 | 541 | TX |
10 | 26-Jun | Trevor Goosby | OT | 0.8794 | 541 | TX |
11 | 28-Jun | Billy Walton | Edge | 0.8756 | 604 | TX |
12 | 19-Jun | Will Randle | TE | 0.8725 | 676 | LA |
13 | 26-Jun | Andre Cojoe | IOL | 0.8686 | 761 | TX |
| | | | 0.9127 | 355 | |
The average player is ranked 355th, with a .9127. I am less critical of OL evals, as they are really hard to do and lots of OL that are in the 300 and 400s often turn out to be quite good after several years in the system. And they have signed 5 of those. Of the 3 top 100 players, 2 are on the D ... did they come to Texas because of Manning? That doesn't seem to be very "pied piper-ish" to me. While there are lots of teams that would kill for 13 players in the top 750, we expect higher of Texas especially if Manning has the tails everyone is talking about.
As a point of comparison, it was between UGA and TX for Manning. We lost fair and square. How have we done since Manning went to Texas? Not listed in the chart below, we signed two 2024 players both of whom are receivers - a TE and WR. They are ranked 26th and 53rd. It's obviously early, they could drop, and they might not end up at UGA. But both are homegrown Georgia boys, so I feel good in saying that not landing Manning won't hurt next year. As for this year, the numbers since Manning:
| 23-Jun | Arch Manning to TX | | | | |
1 | 23-Jul | Joenel Aguero | S | 0.9832 | 34 | MA |
2 | 10-Jul | Raylen Harris | LB | 0.9771 | 50 | FL |
3 | 16-Jul | Troy Bowles | LB | 0.9732 | 56 | FL |
4 | 1-Jul | Daniel Harris | CB | 0.935 | 151 | FL |
5 | 19-Jul | Jamaal Jarrett | DL | 0.927 | 180 | NC |
6 | 22-Jul | Kelton Smith | IOL | 0.9189 | 218 | GA |
| | | | 0.9524 | 115 | |
5 are on the D so we can argue Manning wouldn't have affected that. But we seem to have survived not singing Manning. I also do think we might have signed a better WR class - our TE class is awesome, and we will have a good, if not elite WR class. Manning would have helped there, I think.
I think Manning could be really good. I wish we would have landed him. Texas should be glad they did, and it was a huge bump for Sark. I am just not sold on any players being a pied piper like many talk about. And I don't think Manning is any different.
