The 21st Century all bust team

I guess? Honestly a lot of the shine around Appel came off pretty quickly after he got drafted.

Outside of Harper and Strasburg, he had more pre draft hype than anyone else I can remember. Drafted in the top 10, turns it down because of the money and goes back to college and then gets drafted first overall the next year.

Sucks in the minors, gets traded to Philly, sucks in their farm system, retires and disappears for a few years, makes a comeback last year.

I’m comfortable calling a first overall pick that doesn’t make his MLB debut until he’s 30 and as a reliever a bust

Brandon Wood
Dallas McPherson
Ian Stewart
Adam Miller (was in top 50 four years in a row and never made it past AAA)
Franklin Morales (did manage to at least pitch for 10 years)
Fernando Martinez
Jeremy Hermida
Jesus Montero
Matt LaPorta

Trey Ball was a pretty dumb #7 pick though he only cracked one top 100 list (#89 by BA in 2014). He had a 5.02 ERA across the minors and never made it past AA

Ben McDonald stands out as a guy that was hyped like those Nationals picks.

Too old for this, not really a bust either. But like Griffey Jr the year before, was a big name before he was went #1.

Delmon Young

He went #1 overall in 2003 and was rated a top 3 prospect four times (#1 in 2006), and it amounted to a 98 OPS+ and 3.2 WAR.

That was before I paid any attention to the draft

That was just the inarguable one I thought of, it's not like there aren't more. Hell Adley Rutschman was a bigger deal than Appel. He just didn't have Boras representing him and only went through one draft cycle.

Victor Robles? 4.1 fWAR in 1527 PA and most of that came from 2019 (3.6 WAR, and that was mostly from defensive metrics as he had a 92 wRC+). He has a career 81 wRC+. he hit well in the minors, but he hardly dominated (.301/.391/.464 throughout the minors; .286/.360/.448 in AAA). He was rated as a top 10 prospect by most publications (BP, BA, MLB, FanGraphs).

That red headed woman in Mad Men.

Still has time to turn it around, but he was a higher rated prospect than Soto, and he would have been called up instead of Soto had he not been hurt at the time

Ah he'll be OK, he might just turn out to be another Desmond Jennings...

Oops. That might be another name for us

I think Robles was only rated higher because he remained on lists longer while Soto broke out and made the majors before he could rank as high as Robles, I think they were ranked in a similar tier if you look at them when they were the same age/level (Robles is also older I believe).

Soto could retire now and I'd say there's a very high chance he'll finish with way more career WAR than Robles. The hit tool just hasn't materalized for Robles (even with his speed he only has a career .299 BABIP, and he's a career .236 hitter), and there's been little power to compensate.

I thought about Jennings but he was a pretty useful player for four years (11+ WAR from 2011-14) before falling apart from injuries. Disappointing career, but I don't think he was a total bust. I was expecting him to be another Carl Crawford type that would wreak havoc on Red Sox catchers.
