1917 was great; especially in IMAX.

The use of planes started in WWI. Carriers were the new thing in WWII. WWI was brutal in those trenches.I will say this, I think World War 1 changed the world more than World War 2. World War 1 was basically the death blow to the old system of monarchs and imperialism. You saw four monarchs overthrown that had been around since 1500s: Ottomans, Hapsburgs, Romanovs, and Hohenzollerns. This is when the world really started to get behind Democracy as the best form of governments and Kings and Queens were out.
You had the first true anti-war movements.
You had the first true mass industrial war.
You had the beginnings of mechanized war although WW2 really saw it come to fruitation.
You had the formation of the League of Nations which basically was the UN prior to UN.
Basically a lot of modern thought started after WW1. Prior to WW1, war was seen as glorious, invading others was not a big deal, Kings and Queens still ruled most the world, colonialism/imperialism was a thing, etc.

My parents grew up under Fascism during WWII and lived in the Nazi occupied territory. I have a lot of first hand accounts from that war.Tanks as well. Interestingly, they got that name because a British soldier compared them to water tanks and it ended up sticking. In other languages, they were not called tanks for a long time, it only started sticking after the war.
Culturally, a lot changed after WW1. The soldiers came back from the trenches disillusioned about the government, modern world, etc. It was the first time the average citizen started questioning things on a grand scale.
This pushed the world towards democracy but it also opened the door to other dangerous ideas such as Communism and Fascism.

For anyone interested, I just stumbled on a damned decent movie on Youtube based on Robert Harris' Fatherland "alternative history" book. @Hank Kingsley I think you'd like the movie and books.
Germany won the war, it's the early 60's and Hitler is celebrating his 75th birthday and hopes to sign a peace accord with Joseph Kennedy, the President.
Rutger Hauer is great in this movie and I was very pleasantly surprised. Expected a 5, got a solid 8.
