I think the independent arbiter got this case right. The overarching issue that I saw was that the punishment in the past for much less severe, yet equally unproven crimes, was equal to what Watson got. In what world, other than a "fuck Dallas" world, should what Zeke was accused of be punished the same as what Watson is accused of? Both have equally believable accusers, only difference is Zeke's independent investigator told Goodell the witness isn't believable and its likely no crime was committed. Unfortunately a fucking cunt Giants fan was handing out penalties.

Goodell and both the league and NFLPA wanted to move on from using him as sole arbiter in punishment cases, so they chose Sue Robinson to fit that position. Then "JK, lol" when the punishment handed out wasn't to their liking. The league decides a punishment and if the independent arbiter's decision doesn't at least fit their minimums, they override the decision.

Don't get me wrong, whatever Watson gets is what he deserves. The NFL just wasted everyone's time and took extra unnecessary steps to get here and that's my chief question/complaint.

Yeah, they definitely went in wanting a certain punishment, but I think Goodell went the outside route this time because of the trade. He answers to the owners, and even though Cleveland and Houston are clown shows, they're still his bosses.

Could have all been lies. Could have all been the truth. That's why cases like these very rarely result in convictions in court.

Either way, it's harmful to the NFL's brand to allow Watson to get off on anything that is perceived too light by the general public, so I get the more harsh punishment they handed down.

The comical thing to me in all this is the NFL going out of its way to use an independent arbiter only to overrule the decision immediately.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the plan was to be using independent arbiters going forward. This was just the first case since they changed...and naturally they cut that person's power off at the knees right away.

I was agreeing with the previous poster that it should be in criminal charges, if all other things like you mention weren’t already a thing.

The arbiter could have called for no discipline, which would have prevented Goodell from suspending Watson at all.

Of course he has a fully guaranteed contract, so LMAO at the Browns. Gave up a ton and a fully guaranteed $229M over the next 4 years. Thankfully they only paid him a pittance this year, because that's all he was worth this year.
