Here we go...

Perhaps one of the biggest matchups of Josh Heupel's tenure and a chance for Tennessee to really started to turn the corner.

Gem from past, I love that Lou Holtz on pregame show :dhd: as well as the classic CBS intro.

Not a big game for Tennessee.

Florida is as vulnerable as they can be right now. Terrible QB play. Defensive leader is out. UT double digit favorites and it’s a home game. Should be an easy easy win for Tennessee.

Are his annual games vs Alabama and Georgia less of a challenge? I think not.

When you have lost 16 out of 17 against Florida, it is a BIG game.

Looks like Tillman is out for UT, that’s a big hit for the offense.

I’m thinking this will be a tight / challenging game. I ain’t buying the double digit spread against ANY Florida team, UT ain’t that good yet imo.

Crazy to think Peyton Manning never beat Florida.

Florida had a lot of talent too (especially on defense). Watch the game, several player names will be familiar with you if you kept up with NFL in early 2000s.

And Craig James, who killed 5 hookers while at SMU.

Rewatching some of the 1998 game, it looks like a typically Florida-Tennessee game, both turnover the ball and Tennessee looking horrible (especially on offense).

Yeah. People always say 0-4, technically yes, but the first one he wasn't the starter it was Todd Helton (Manning was 3rd string)

He put up good yards and TDs, but the problem was A) UF had some great defenses and intercepted him like 6-7 times (4 in one game), the other was UT's defense shit the bed in those games.

those two picks at the goal line in 1996 were killer

Spurrier seemed like the type of dude that had zero patience for kickers that missed easy FG's
Nor QB’s who were struggling… swapped em series for series at times

It's more psychological when talking about Florida. Over the last 20-25 years, UT has had the better team several times yet....

I thought the same thing but my Dad made a great point, Florida has just had better teams most of those years. I think you had that argument in Phillip Fulmer era but it has been very rare that Tennessee had a better team since then (especially at time of matchup, there were a couple of times when Florida fell apart later that year but it wasn't the same Florida team that played Tennessee).

I posted a forum in Vol Nation about it: How often has Tennessee been favored against Florida?

I think the only years Tennessee was better and lost were:

Possibly 2014 (I think teams were even and it came down to a last minute FG by Florida),
2015 (hail mary from Florida on 4th and 19 cost us game),
2016 (we won),
2017 (yes we went 0-8 in SEC that year but we had a good team when we played Florida and choked game away starting our slide).

Outside of those games, Florida was way better than us most years. The last year of Derek Dooley had us favored too and we totally and epically collapsed then costing Derek Dooley his job.

Now Fulmer era had a lot of years we choked:

1993
1997
1999
2000
2002 - Entire season was underachieving. We were huge favorite to win SEC.
2005 - Perhaps the worse underachieving season in our school's history. No way that team should have gone 5-6.

Better than Florida all of those years and still lost. Hard to tell in 1995 and 1996 as the teams were very close. Florida had some pretty dang good teams and had Danny Wuerffel (Spurrier's favorite QB) vs. Peyton Manning. (I think Spurrier's system used Danny Wuerffel better than Tennessee utilized Peyton Manning. Florida also had Fred Taylor at Runningback who was a beast).

We’re not in standard time, dolt.
And you’re not supposed to make a game thread until the day of.
