Northwestern's Board of Trustees approves initial schematic design for dynamic new Ryan Field.

Looks wonderful really.

I have seen a few stadiums/arena decrease their capacity recently, and it seems to be a good idea for most of those involved.

I went to a game there a few years ago when I was on a work trip. Nice day out, and a cool old stadium, but it does need a severe facelift.

Good idea making a stadium in the Chicago area handicapped accessible.

I was in Chicago for work a few years back and met up with some folks on their way to Evanston to see a bball game. Now that was a cool experience and a nice little town.

35,000 and 3/4s of the fans there will be from opposing schools.

This just in!
Northwestern has some money.
And Genralissimo Francisco Franco is still dead!

Every time I go to Ryan field a large portion of the crowd is the road team. Every gm the visiting fans rip the stadium which I never understood. I'd much rather watch a gm in a 40k stadium than 100k

"Initial schematic design" ... Did they consult with Charlie Weis to make sure this also has a "decided schematic advantage" over other college stadiums? :rolleyes2:

I’m probably in the minority but I prefer the smaller stadiums. Not counting the Sun Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Jerry’s world, I’ve been to Texas, A&M, OU and Az State’s big “old” ones. I’ve also been to Air Force, TCU and SMU. I’ll take those any day over the monster ones. I haven’t been to Baylor’s new one. But I talked with K-State fans at hotel breakfast on their way back from their Baylor game one year. They said The new Baylor stadium is their favorite one they’ve been to over the years.

But just being small ain’t necessarily good either. UNM, NMSU and UNT’s aint too swift imo. ( I have heard UNT has improved theirs.)

d'accord! To put it in perspective, my first game @ Alabama (1971) was in the 59,000 Bowl, and my first game @ Notre Dame was before they expanded beyond 59,000 (1996). Iowa State is now 60,000. That is the perfect size for a stadium experience IMHO. The monster stadiums just don't do it for me.

If the stadium seats less than 75,000, the program doesn’t belong in the P5. The haves really need to start sticking it to the have nots more

The smaller, updated stadiums can be really cool to be in and this one looks like it will be really nice.

The larger, historical ones are still cool too though. Especially when they fill up and get loud. I remember being down on the Shoe's field after a Michigan game and just kind of doing a circle and looking around at the sheer size of it. It kind of puts you in awe

I love the Horseshoe and the Ohio State Gameday experience. Cannot be beat!

That being said, at some point, the stadiums just get too big. Using Alabama as an example, I have been to games when it was 59,000 (1971), had one upper deck (1994), two upper decks (2005) and now the 100,000 with the ridiculous double decked end zones (Present). Every addition has taken charm away from the stadium, and now it is might as well be renamed Bryant-Denny-Joan Rivers Stadium!
