Crazy. My only thought is -- Jim Leonhard is the guy they want and they feel they may lose him, so starting off like they did this year gave them an excuse to pull the trigger.

Will be interesting to see what they do if Leonhard isn't the guy.
 
Chryst would be a good fit at Nebraska.

You don't see a lot of gimmick offenses in the NFL -- you have a select few teams with certain QB's, but the majority are looking for pro style OL, maulers in the run game, can keep a clean pocket. That's why Wisconsin puts so many OL to the NFL, as they are one of the few who aren't using the RPO looks and instead just line up and run it at you.

I'm just telling you what Wisconsin runs and WHY they have so many offensive linemen drafted into the NFL who go on to have long, successful careers and why quality OL will go to Wisconsin. It isn't like Wisconsin is putting out 6th and 7th round picks. I believe they've had 5 offensive linemen drafted in the 1st round in the last decade, they've had NFL All-Pro's in Ramczyk (sp) and Frederick, that doesn't even include guys like Joe Thomas, who arguably one of the best all-time.

THAT is what has made Wisconsin successful. They aren't located in an area where they will bring in all these athletes to spread it out and throw it all over. That's why they run the type of offense that they do.

That's okay if that's what they want. Saban preferred that way too but he's adapted with great success. I know, I know, he can recruit better players. But he's gone from "game manager" QBs to ones that can impact a game when they can't run it.

Giggles aside, there's a not unrealistic scenario Leonhard stays at Wisconsin, Nebraska takes someone other than Leipold, and KU keeps Leipold who is nearing 60 years of age. Uncomfortably high % Leipold leaves for my liking, but it's not a given he is gone either.

I think that's a load of crap. There are plenty of ways to make a passing game mesh with Wisconsin. If you are not mixing in spread concepts, you are NOT preparing lineman for the NFL given where it has been going. Running a "pro style" offense is code for dinosaur OC/coaches. Hell, even triple option principles are creeping into the NFL as more ultra-mobile QB's enter the league, most noticeably in Baltimore; except Lamar can actually throw. Granted, easier said than done but this is a lame cope out.

Pass blocking isn't about mauling people per se, it's about technique.

I think you answered the question for yourself. The whole recruiting better players gives you options. So does being located in the middle of the richest conference recruiting footprint.

Wisconsin doesn't have that option. They could move to the spread offense, but at what cost? Those OL recruits that have made Wisconsin a respectable program and arguably the top team in the B1G West could now choose to go elsewhere. It isn't as if the state of Wisconsin is pumping out skill position talent and they definitely aren't pumping out elite QB recruits. Mertz is the highest ranked QB recruit they ever signed.

I love how Wisconsin does what works for them.

Ohh I know I was just joking. He has a good thing going in Lawrence and a lot of times the grass isn’t greener on the other side. I wouldn’t be shocked if he stayed.

College coaches aren’t paid to prepare guys for the NFL.
