When is the last time a defending National Champ had a losing record?

The defense LSU has is complete shit and I blame Bo Pelini. The guy has a reputation for ruining good programs.

I believe this is correct. If it's not, someone let me know.

Michigan State 1966 - Went 3-7 in 1967

However, some people don't consider this national championship legitimate. ND finished #1 in the Coaches and AP Poll that year. MSU claims the title and the NCAA recognizes it

If you don't consider that one legit, the next would be Ohio State in 1942.
Ohio State 1942 - Went 3-6 in 1943

42 is contested too. UGA has a legit claim, but with that said, any WW2 era championships should be taken with a grain of salt

Ohio State finished #1 in the AP in 1942. I think everyone recognizes AP championships as legit ones.

That said, you are right about WW2 era championships. To answer the OPs question, it's been a long time and it doesn't happen often.

I think OSU and UGA both have legit claims to 42. Lets just be thankful that split titles are a thing of the past.

Agreed on both accounts. It's amazing how many great championships college football has missed out on.

As bad as LSU has looked, they’d still blow the wheels off Tennessee

LSU will win out. Vols lucky they aren’t in the way of that freight train
