Let's Talk About This 12 Team Playoff Deal...

More money doesn’t automatically equal a better product.

Look at OoC one-off neutral site games vs legitimate H&H‘s.

The neutral site one-offs always make more money than the H&H’s. But the games almost always have better energy, better vibe, and more entertaining when it’s at a team’s actual home stadium instead of an NFL stadium.
I agree that it doesn't have to mean that, but I think it makes sense that if by expanding they were going to ruin the sport the payout wouldn't increase by 3 or 4-fold.

I've been to a lot of neutral site games, and I love the energy. Especially where the fans are evenly divided.

Yeah, those of us that are CFB nerds would live a G5 playoff. Just not sure there are enough of us to warrant a big enough media payment that would equal what they are getting now.

But a 12 team G5 like what is proposed now would work with the first three rounds played at campuses.
That might be too much. 12 team for p5 or P2 middle 3. Then a 4 team for g5

This is a contradictory statement - how can you be a money grubbing heathen and ruin the sport. If you ruin the sport, then they won't make any money so no money grubbing. They are money grubbing because they are making it way better and people will pay to see more good football. The market will speak loudly.
OK, so you're fine with losing too many of our traditional rivalry games. I'm not. Most people aren't. But it's a great improvement in your opinion. Tradition is so yesterday in today's world for a lot of people.

It's happening in 2024 so only one more year after this until a 12 team playoff. The announcement is expected today.

Hate it. But it is what it is. Will make bowl season more compelling, will make the regular season less compelling.

I just don't get it. If FCS players can handle a 24 team playoff and DIII players can handle a 32 team playoff, why can't G5 players handle a 12 team one? And here is something to gnaw on...........
They had some games in the first round that weren't close and it didn't stop the playoffs one damn bit.

Boise State's win over Oklahoma is so over romanticized. Oklahoma was a very meh 2 loss Big 12 champ that year, and Boise needed some school yard stuff to win the game.

I guess it could make the regular season less meaningful. But another viewpoint would be: wouldn't the teams during the regular season be playing hard to get that first round bye and home field advantage?

For every regular season game that is less meaningful, there will be 2 games made more meaningful.

Yea I don't think the regular season becomes significantly less meaningful.

You have the few teams who know they can lose 2 games a season and likely still get in every time. But other than that teams will still be fighting. Those byes will be quite valuable.

so if it were 2024 and the rankings stayed the same post-CCG's this weekend, this would be the games we'd get:

Washington at Ohio State
Utah at Alabama
Kansas State at Tennessee
Clemson at Penn State

so they are going to use the NY6 bowls in this right? Are they going to add another bowl game to the rotation? They need one more for them to have the quarter, semi and championship games under one umbrella.. or are they going to use one of them, twice?

no because the winner of the AAC 18 vs 22 would be the 6th highest ranked conference champion and would bump out #12 Washington. but that would only assume that the rankings stayed but we know they dont so more likely Washington gets in with a Utah loss, Kansas State loss or Clemson loss.
for some chaos lets go with
Michigan somehow loses to unranked purdue and slides
1. UGA champ
2. TCU champ
3. USC champ
4. Clemson (as the next highest ranked champion)
then you would have

5 Ohio State vs 12 the next highest ranked champion UTSA who is 23/24 in AP/Coaches? Troy who is 26 AP 27 coaches by vote? Purdue
6 Alabama vs 11 AAC (Tulane or UCF)
7 Michigan vs 10 Washington
8 Tennessee vs 9 Penn State

big 10 could have 3 teams in and not their champion

From the scenarios presented just above, I will take any of that. Some of those are pretty interesting. Start this next season. Just think of the $$$$$.

the quarter and semis will be the 6 the National Championship game has already been bid out and i would assume those contracts dont change.
This year at SoFi
Followed by
NRG
Mercedes-Benz
Hard Rock Stadium

To expand on this though. It won't ruin the regular season but there are going to be A LOT of blowouts in the 12 team playoff.

Most games in the 4 team playoff have been blowouts thatll just expand to the 12 team field.

lol at Notre Dame, slowly being forced into a conference

No, their AD was in the group of 4 that came up with that idea. He acknowledged that they would never get a bye and said they were good with that. Maybe that changes in the future, but for now ND is good with it - it was their idea.
