Clemson is currently ranked #9, I don't see them jumping into the picture, but I agree with you. A four team playoff should have Conference Champions in it unless there is a worthy undefeated Independent or G5 team.

If one of those losses weren't to a team Ohio State beat this theory might be more likely.

i like Clemson a lot more than i like Ohio State, but i can't agree with this. Clemson will finish the season with less Top 25 wins and one more loss. They also share a common opponent in Notre Dame. Ohio State beat Notre Dame while ND destroyed Clemson. The extra game isn't enough to propel Clemson over Ohio State.
