So the other night we caught what I suspect was a rerun of the last WKC and we watched the whole thing through from the last 4 groups until Best in Show. I've kinda watched parts of it in the past but nothing truly in-depth and my impression is that this thing is one giant scam. The people that judge are more interested in promoting purebred dogs that no one has ever heard of then actually giving all dogs a real shot at winning.

That is why you will see the wire-haired fox terriers and the poodles do so well and only occasionally will you get a German Shepard but you aren't ever going to get a lab, golden, Boston terrier or dachshund picked as best in show. In the final my favorites were a Golden Lab (which the crowd went nuts over and was extremely rare for one to even be considered), a boxer and a sheltie.

Who won Best in Show? A damn standard poodle that was ridiculously groomed. I could have lived with just about any of the other dogs winning without much bitching but the damn poodle (note we owned a miniature poodle so I'm not anti-poodle but I didn't have pom poms on its damn butt either).

I'm done with these elitist bastards who don't understand what a true dog really is. I will still watch the agility tests because those are cool but no one has a shot in hell but the border collies who are freak athletes for dogs.

LOL. Congratulations, you just figured out that dog shows were all designed to boost the price of purebred dogs, and mostly "frou-frou" breeds?

Real dog owners don't need dog shows to know that working breeds are some of the best dogs on the planet. (Or even mixed breeds can be.) Look up the winners for the past 20-30 years, and you'll see maybe a couple of working breed best-in-shows, and the rest are all terriers, toys, "non-sporting" (read=poodle) and hunting breeds. Labs, goldens, boxers, huskies and mastiffs are all great dogs. But they're also popular already and relatively cheap to acquire. Thanks to elitist dog shows, we can see that intricate rat-things like this can have a preserved price point of $4400 / puppy:

Hi-yaa, that's ugly.

Yeah. Labs or Goldens never seem to get Best in Show.

They are the best dogs in my opinion.

I believe that you have mis-characterized the standard poodle and probably because of the gay looking haircuts that many dog owners give them and I'll admit that I looked down on them for many years for the same reason. Then I met a customer that had 3 standards of various ages.

Standard poodle is not only one of the smartest (2nd only to the border collie) dog breeds, it is remarkably versatile. They are not a true working dog, but they are excellent agility dogs, they herd with the best shepherd breeds, they track very well and can be trained to be excellent hunting dogs. Throw in outstanding obedience and a docile nature that makes them fine family pets and assistance dogs and it all makes for an outstanding dog.

Both are great dogs and make wonderful family pets. I've found the lab puppies to be really rambunctious and spastic compared to the goldens so I prefer the retriever.

Man, border collies are legit freaks of nature in the agility contests.

I watch mainly for the Terrier Group... love the Welsh, Lakeland, Irish and Airedales! And yes, the wire fox, too :D

I have nothing against the standard poodle. They're smart, obedient, loyal dogs, who are fairly healthy and athletic. But I do have something against the pompous weirdos who shave their fur into obscene haircuts and tie ribbons and other assorted crap into them. There's one in my neighborhood who is super sweet, to the point where she likes even my dog.

The miniature and the toy versions are a different story. Yappy, stupid, and marketed to (two different generations of) the worst kind of dog owners.

I've never had one, but those dogs just seem freakin' cool

I'm with you, I don't like the faggy hairdos or the miniature and toy poodles.
