Honestly surprised people don't die on the field in the NFL more often

Not that Hamlin is dead, and I wish him the best, but I often have thought that it should happen more often. It is a gladiator level sport, and the physical punishment is nothing short of brutal on many plays.

I am not sure how there isnt more people carted off on stretchers, and even dying of injuries sustained on the field. In construction, on the Strip out here, If a guy died on the job, they would just hurry and load him in an ambulance, and ship him off to pretend he died at the hospital, instead of on the job. Thats what I thought was happening last night.

You would also think that the NFL would have shit in place for when something like this happens. Instead of the perpetual limbo that was the broadcast last night. ESPN didnt have anything to go to. No protocol in place for the game being postponed by the NFL. Seems like this should have been talked about at some point by both the league and broadcast partners.

The other thing, Hamlin got hurt doing what he loved, I assume. Wouldnt that be a rallying point for the team to go out and beat the fuck out the opposition? Would he have told them to cancel the game, or got win it for him, if he could have spoken of course. Would you want the game to stop for your incident?

Pete as a historian and football fan I can tell you that deaths on the field or results of what happened on the field are more common than most people realize. It seems to happen more at the high school level which is really scary. Historically there were a lot of deaths from football in the early 20th century to the point that there was a serious discussion about disbanding the sport.

It is a dangerous sport, so yes I get your point when you say its surprising this of this nature do not happen more

I think that you see it more in high school because there's a potential huge disparity in size of the players, as well as potential issues with the skill level where some kid who never played a down in his life is about to get run over by some guy who signed a full ride with Alabama.

That's what I was thinking. You know there's a certain level of talent in CFB and particularly NFL. Major disparities in high school.

Speaking of which, it's crazy to witness sports at the young-teen age levels. You've got kids that look like they're 10 playing against others that look like grown men.

There was a local team that had a bunch of kids hit puberty and start growing prior to last season and they steamrolled all their competition. Everyone started talking about how good the varsity team would be when all those kids reach it. Then, this season the other teams also had a bunch of big kids and the team that was steamrolling everyone was below .500.

I'm not surprised.

there are times that I am surprised the injuries are worse but I am not surprised more people don't die on the field. Humans only have the capacity to inflict so much damage to another person when playing. You may call it a "gladiator sport" but it really isn't. Players are in contact with another player for a short period and a lot of rules have been put in place to get rid of dangerous hits. If they got rid of things like fair catches and that sort of thing where a defenseless player just gets rocked by an incoming player at full speed, I think there would be more broken bones, but I don't think death.

like...what causes of death would you be expecting to see?

You know, I don't often give props to ESPN because they usually suck really bad, but I thought they did a good job rambling on ad hoc for 90 minutes with no direction. I listened to a doctor speak about it and he said that a blow to the chest in the heart area could only cause heart failure if caught at the exact right time which is the point where the heart has beat and is preparing for another one. You can miss that in a millisecond so the odds of it happening in a pro game are quite high. If the hit happened at any other time, the heart would have taken it in stride.

I hear it happening in HS football more often as another poster mentioned. I'm not doc but could it possibly have something to do with still being underdeveloped? IDK shit in this regard.

Yeah, I guess they could have played again but with half the guys in tears, it likely would have been a yuuuuuuge disaster.

never said it was safe...but they do a good job of making it as safe as possible.

best I can think is maybe a heart attack from one of the larger players out there.

those getting hit aren't just standing there waiting to get hit most the time and there are very few times when a blind hit comes in...and even then I don't think that would be enough to kill another man. It is really hard to exert enough force in a tackle to kill another person...especially when padded like they are.

All kinds of shit. Someone could get a blood clot, could have an undetected aneurism, broken rib could puncture a major artery, brain bleed, .... Nevermind, youre right, it could never happen.
