Honestly surprised people don't die on the field in the NFL more often

I think that you see it more in high school because there's a potential huge disparity in size of the players, as well as potential issues with the skill level where some kid who never played a down in his life is about to get run over by some guy who signed a full ride with Alabama.

I agree, and there's likely due to poor tackling form...ie, leading with their head down and breaking their own neck.

Interestingly, the one death on the football field that sticks out the most to me wasn't because of the physical contact.

Korey Stringer of the Vikings died of a heat stroke during practice back in 2001.

I'm surprised that doesn't happen more often, considering the start of two-a-days is in August.

I vaguely remember that now that you mention it. IIRC, weren't there severe restrictions placed on practices at least in part due to that incident?

His uncle posted that he’s being intubated and sedated on his stomach to take the pressure off his lungs. He said he had sustained injuries to his lungs as well. (A lot of early Covid patients who were intubated were also placed on their stomachs as it’s easier to breathe that way.

His uncle stated that he had to be resuscitated twice, once on the field and once at the hospital. He was on 100% oxygen but it’s down to 50% now so maybe there’s some hope.

I guess its come out that the uncle was mistaken about the 2nd resuscitation.
The part where they had to turn him to take pressure off his lungs is scary to me. When early covid patients had to do that, it ended very poorly most of the time. Obviously, different scenarios, but still scary.

Yeah. Basically it was a coin flip once you were on a ventilator during early Covid. But even if you weren’t ventilated they told you to lay on your stomach because it was easier to breathe.

Yeah.

And also, I could be confusing this with another incident too, but.....

I remember back in that time, Mini Thins and Stackers were all the rage for "weight loss" but were really being used as energy pills.

I do know the FDA abolished one of the chemicals that was in them.

I think that he had been using those as well but I might be confusing him with someone else in this regard.

Yeah.

Ephedrine is what I am thinking about.

Yeah a lot of those got banned due to serious health and safety risks. I recall hearing stories about how a huge percentage of MLB players were on amphetamines and all sorts of other shit back in the day.

I didn't understand the not resuming the game decision. Didn't make sense to me. The "Let's win it for the Gipper!" or whatever that shit was...what happened to it? Gipper would be on his own today I suppose.
Different culture today. Different mentality.

The kids these days didn't grow up with dads, uncles or even grandfathers who lived (and died) through real wars that were truly "do or die" and if the man next to you got taken out you had to proceed or you're next. The vast majority of NFL players and leaders have been pampered since they were in middle school... ...star athletes ...school popularity ...full scholarships to power 5 universities ...participation trophies ...everyone take a knee and cry whenever someone gets a boo boo... ...and hurt fefes are super important to everyone now, too...

(Note: I'm speaking in cultural generalities - not to this specific incident. That needs to be explicitly stated before @ill swoops in and sprays his period blood all over this post.)
