Seriously, that's awesome! Kudos to both you and wifey, and kid.

It's a very hard thing to do. Humans are not savers by nature.... going all the way back through evolution to the times of hunting and gathering. Couple that with the understanding that "tomorrow is never promised..." and we need that instant satisfaction.
I still struggle to save. We have a certain number that we always keep in savings, but it should be more. My wife is a spender of the highest order! Its a constant struggle, and the source of a good majority of our arguments, is where we spend.

Welcome to adulthood....

Seriously.

I bet 75% of any client I pick up in their 40s, is woefully lagging on their retirement savings, relative to what they want their retirement to look like.

It's for that very reason, that my favorite clients, are the sub-30s, where I can mold them before they've established bad habits. Even though I make the least off of them.... In fact, it actually costs me $$$ the first 5 years or so (so they better stick around!).

Money is the #1 cause of arguments. When I first started dating my now wife she told me she doesn't like seafood (chaching), doesn't like steak (chaching), and if I bought her jewelry she would dump me (CHACHING!!!). I knew she was a keeper.

As years have gone by she likes steak again but her dad is a serious pitmaster and he made it all the time so she got burned out on steak and brisket. Now she is normal again though. However, she has in the last few years gotten more interested in little jewelry, designer purses, and this StitchFix stuff. But we are both pretty reasonable in our spending so we can save a lot each month. I don't think we have ever had an argument about money, we both HATE debt with a passion and that's our only goal. We have a mortgage and don't buy anything else unless we have the money to buy it outright.

I don't always agree with Dave Ramsey. but he does it the right way as far as saving and shit.

1) Emergency Fund - He says $1,000 - I say $2,500
2) 6-9 months living expenses
3) 15% of income into retirement.

We dont carry any real debt. I use cards for business expenses, just so they are easier to track and account, and pay them off monthly. One for gas, one for food, mainly. Plus doing that boosts the credit scores. I am getting ready to do a huge project in my front yard landscpaing, and adding RV parking to an area of basically wasted space on my property. I figure it will be about 6 to 8 grand. RV parking will add 10 to 15 grand to my property value, so its a no brainer really, and my house is my nest egg for retirement.

The wife want to redo the down stairs bath and laundry room, and my stairs need to be redone. who ever did the stairs years ago, did a shit job on the tile. So we were talking about it, and then she starts sending me picture from work the other day with these elaborate stair\ designs with fucking tread lighting and all this fancy bullshit. I'm just like, there is no way I putting a thousand fucking dollars into a staircase!

On the other hand, I've heard real-life stories of Scrooge-level misers. A woman, whose husband had just passed away, they spent their whole lives living like poor people who could barely make ends meet discovers their net worth was in the millions.

That's mind boggling too.

we need to tighten up for a few years. my damn kids get everything right now.
It's funny how when mine were younger, there were so many fun little things we could have gotten them, but didn't, and now that they're teens they only want new phones or new clothes, but they want to pick them out/buy them with their own money most of the time.

We will pay off the civic this year and probably get her a new odessy around feb of next year. i want a damn minivan i can close the back with the key fob

which brings me to another complaint. FUCK HONDA and their key fobs' the battery only last like 3 months now

Put a cover over the rv parking spot so my fifth wheel won't be in the sun all day when I come and visit. I also require 50 amps, water, and a 3 inch sewer dump.

Yeah, I am building a big shed, running power and water, but I don't think its even possible to get a drain pipe over there. Not sure it would be worth the cost.

Ok, well just warning you that without a dump station I'll only be able to stay about a week.

the one complaint i have about this fucking house, is that I don't have a damn spicket next to the driveway.
