MSU’s Payton Thorne AND Keon Coleman enter the portal

Yikes

I guess Coach Tucker needs to hit up Casey Thompson

There were reports coming out after spring game he might lose his starting job to the back up. Not saying he would have lost it or that's why he's transferring, just that it was out there. Will be interesting to see where he lands. Wonder if Illinois might be a landing spot.

Losing Coleman is a bigger deal IMO. He bailed MSU out in a ton of pass plays that they wouldn’t otherwise have gotten.

Yeah, I agree he was really productive last year. Also lost Reed to the NFL, so now down their top two WR from last year. Looking like another down year for MSU. Starting to think the '21 year may have been an outlier. '20 was bad '22 was bad and '23 doesn't project that great. 6-6 looks to be the ceiling IMO.

why is the WR portaling? he tight with the QB?

Heard he wanted to enter it because of the QB, meaning they didn't get along. Apparently the WR may return, but probably unlikely.

I would’ve said Western, but for some reason they fired his dad.

Yeah, I thought that too, but because of that, probably not likely. It'll be interesting if he goes down a level to the MAC. I think he's a pretty good QB.

SPARTY losing some legit starters

Honestly the 2021 season was pretty fluky for Michigan State. I figured they would be down last year (I strongly disagree with them being in the preseason top 25 last year) but they were even worse than I expected. Now it looks like another season potential losing season is looming.

They'll build back up through the portal I'm sure. They also have a 4* QB in Katin Houser who's in his 2nd year and was a top 15 QB in the class. OSU just had two 4* WRs from the 2022 class hit the portal, so I'm sure Sparty will look at them among other schools. I honestly wasn't a fan of Thorne's so I don't think this is that big of a deal.

Pretty rare to have full fledged starters bolt. Usually kids do it after losing their spot. Only Thorne was in line for that potential and it was still just a potential.

I think it was probably a lot more than "just potential", since as you mentioned he was a full-fledged starter. He was very underwhelming and they clearly needed a change. Coleman leaving sucks, but there are plenty of good WRs available in the portal.

sirius xm was talking about it.. mentioned UF/Auburn to look out for the MSU players who left

Their best WR and CB left, along with a 2 year starting fighting for his job again in year 3. (two time captain)
