TV series you almost gave up on, but glad you didn't

I thought My Name is Earl sounded and looked so stupid based on previews. Ended up being one of my all-time favorite shows
 
South Park. Wrote it off due to the animation style, but the comedy chops are top notch.
 
Halt And Catch Fire

It's kind of a mess and derivative for much of its first season. It comes together better in its final 2 or 3 episodes to where it was just good enough for me to at least give it a token attempt at watching the first couple episodes of season 2. And I'm glad I did because from season 2 until the series finale, its an excellent show.

Have a lot of regret for not quitting shows soon enough. But it’s rare for me to gain interest once I’ve thought about giving up on a series.

Maybe Frazier.

Felt very uncomfortable with his Seattle lifestyle and persona at first. But wound up loving the show.

Parks and Rec is another that grew on me.
 
The Office, for sure.


I never watched it until a few years ago, when I was laid up, and I fucking hated the first season. It's a great show.

Game of Thrones. When it came out watched the first episode and wasn't really into it but a few weeks later decided to watch a few more and was hooked.
 
The Wire.
I kept hearing about how great it was, but when I finally got around to watching it, I couldn't finish the first episode.
It took me a couple of tries. The only reason I finally finished the first episode (after which I still wasn't hooked, but was willing to try another episode, or two) was becasue I think Dominic West is cute.
I ended up loving the series.
 
Invincible. I gave up twice on the first episode until my nephew convinced to "just finish the first episode."

I did and was like, "HOLY SHIT!"

I was hooked up until the last season. The death spiral of poor writing was hard to watch.

I have the box set somehow,:noidea: and er'body raved about it...man, I have tried a couple times, but fell asleep both times.

Maybe I'll give it another try.

Almost its own category. GoT was slow, but if you gave it time- became enthralling and a joy to watch. Then, yeah- the writing was miserably worse and it became clear the producers were aware that they needed to end it, and had killed off too many characters already.
The show's superfans were fun though. Great to watch people wearing 'Lannister' socks or completely lose their shit over a fake spoiler. :biggrin:

Sopranos was arguably the same way, though it was better from the start, and fell even harder than GoT.

Highlighting these posts to make a general point; why would you ever bail on a show after the first episode, especially a prestige drama type of show? I could see maybe a generic sitcom because you pick up the vibe, etc. But pretty much all shows need time to build. You're not gonna get that in 1 episode. You should do 3 to 4 episodes at minimum. Some shows are really good and can hook you with the pilot, but you should never bail just because the pilot was lackluster.

It prolly is the best show I’ve ever watched.



But completely get what you’re saying on the first episode. Snot Boogie… dumbest name in the whole series.

Homicide:Life on the Street was one of my favorites in the 90’s. And a friend couldn’t believe I wasn’t into The Wire. Took a little effort to give it time.

Not sure anything has brought more interesting, believable characters into one series.

Michael B. Jordan is still Wallace, whenever I see him.
 
Squidbillies and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I never watched at first because it was shows about talking hillbilly squid and fast food items, but as soon as I gave em a shot they became two of my favorite shows.

Spent many nights in college high as shit watching squidbillies. Put on a few episodes a couple weeks back and the wife came in. She was quite confused about what i was watching. May pick it back up and watch it all the way thru.

Parks and Rec definitely took a while to find its footing. The cast upgrades after the first season were huge. In the first season they seemed like they wanted Lindsey Knope to be an enthusiastic version of Michael Scott. It's Always Sunny was the same way though the first season was a lot better. I didn't start watching either until they were well under way though.
