GAME San Jose State@USC - Right Now - PAC 12 Network

Defense needs to get on the same page. A lot of transfers and a couple of freshmen playing their first game together. They looked better than last years defense, but they have work to do.

End of the day, it was the kind of early season win coaches love...

They won handily and weren't really threatened, but there's lots to yell at the players about.

Yeah, but... DAMN! That "D" needs a LOT of work still. It was THAT obvious.

First half made me a bit queasy watching that SJ State QB move around. They weren't a bad team by any means but, GEEZ...

By the 4th, I was seriously wondering how much of that 30+ point lead SC was gonna give back! :drink:

And, yeah... It was still nice to still get that "win"!

yeah that's the thing with transfers.. no matter the work put in the spring/summer and fall camp.. it takes a few games for them to get into sync.

Typical Riley team. Good to great O. Sad ass D because he's sticking with Alex Grinch. If you put Muleshoe at any other top program with Grinch it would just get you the same thing. Lot of wins and then ugly losses when they can't stop anyone with the game on the line. Don't hate on me, USC fans. Spend your time riding your head coach's ass to make a change so you can get to where you want to be.

No doubt there's plenty to do.

The main difference that I saw was that last years team relied on turnovers to get stops (they were +22 last year which is ridiculous). This one, at least after the first couple of drives, actually got 3 and outs and pressured the QB.

Imo, they will need to shorten the rotation a bit and I thought Grinch got a little too cute trying to show different things with a defense that has a bunch of transfers. It's what led to that touchdown just before halftime.

This isn't going to be a great defense, but it should at least be decent, which combined with what the offense can do, might be enough to win the PAC and get to the playoff.

Of course, I say that with not having seen Utah, UW, Oregon or UCLA yet.

Meh, we'll see. The defense already looked better than last year. Not that last year is a high bar or anything.

One thing I saw with Grinch is that he tries to get too cute with some of his calls. The td that SJSU got just before halftime was a direct result of that. Their last td was a kid just making a helluva catch.

No one is going to mistake this defense for the better ones from the Pete Carroll era, but unlike last year, it can be decent. With their offense, decent should be good enough.

Hey, guys, you sound like Riley-era Oklahoma fans.

We kept saying that every year and it just steadily got worse and worse. Trust me; you'll be screaming for Grinch to be fired if Riley stays at USC long enough. As bad as it is right now at OU at least we might (repeat MIGHT) end up better off with Venables in the SEC. But there was no way it was going to be good long term in the SEC for OU if something didn't happen. And it did. A bomb blew up the whole thing. :)

Not really. SJ State is not a bad team at all.

The Spartans have Oregon State next and that could be a winnable game since they have them at home. Maybe.

But, after that? Looking at their schedule......SJSU could win 9 or so games, depending on if they can upset OSU because they will be favored......they have to play Boise, AF, SDSU, and Fresno but I can see them splitting those 4 games. Especially since the only road game is at Boise.

Except there was actual improvement to point to and they did upgrade the talent with a couple of recruits and several from the transfer portal (which didn't exist when they were at OU).

The transfer portal is a potential game changer. At OU, they had to try to improve with bringing in and developing recruits. That takes longer. I don't think anyone on our starting d-line started or was on the team last year, but they are all experienced to some degree. That MAY be the difference in how we can fare better than OU did.

If not, Grinch likely won't be around long.

I’ll take the 28 points versus USC knowing SJSU were never going to win.
