The American Mind and Wilderness Environmentalism

Romanticism was soon born and in general was an enthusiasm for the strange, solitary and very mysterious. The "wilderness" not only offered an escape and appealed to those bored with man and his works in the cities. The solitude created a setting for melancholy and excitement.

Next we will discuss Primitivism as it relates to the philosophy of Romanticism.

"How great are the advantages of solitude! - How sublime is the silence of nature's ever-active energies! There is something in the very name of wilderness, which charms the ear, and soothes the spirit of man. There is religion in it".

Estwick Evans, 1818

This is why I live out in the country with my nearest neighbor being a half mile away. I am part Sioux via a great-great grandparent.

That DNA needs it's naked time.

Primitivism was a pretty cool idea in the realm of Romanticism.
A man's happiness decreases in direct correlation with his status in civilization. Wilderness adventures would toughen you up and give you strength, hardiness, innocence, innate nobility and eroticism. In the early 18th century, I believe men were writing about the wilderness as a beneficial retreat. I can see that, because I have on more than many occasions experienced benefits from solitude at the river or mountain or stream or desert or grassland.

Soon we shall dive into the topic of "Frontier" and "Wilderness" as terms of Nationalistic pride. What separated us as colonizers? Were we too naive to realize that Indigenous Peoples of the "New World" had lived in the "wild and savage land" for thousands of years before Columbus "discovery"? We shall see, because it's a repeated process of social and economic evolution as our frontier moved west.

What a time in America. There was no counterpart in the old world. The American wilderness provided a national identity and forged our national self-esteem. Soon men would create a receptivity towards natural wonders.

American was morally better at this time because if the "wilderness is where God speaks most clearly" then America #1

It is the eroticism which keeps drawing me back for more wilderness adventures/camping trips.

Incredible, especially coming from such a humanitarian as yourself, Handi!

I wouldn't have been a supporter of the Doctrine of Discovery and the slaughter/removal of millions of Indigenous People of America.

Handi, we have the NAACP, the Rainbow Coalition, BLM and the AFLCLGBTQIA+ lighting up the switchboard after your statement. Oh shit, now the AAPI people are calling. What do we tell them, Handi? 😟

Tell them that our country is built on lies, treaties, failed promises, murder, slavery and public land agencies doing whatever they want whenever they want.
