The American Mind and Wilderness Environmentalism

America was always destined for artistic and literary excellence during the late 18th century and early 19th century. But being next to a mountain does not make you a poet. For me, illustrated scenery would have been the way to reflect the nationalism of nature. William Bartlett and Thomas Cole...now there are soom good landscape artists. Very sublime. Hudson River School created and was first school of American art. I like the Rocky Mountain school time period better. Something about the Tetons and Moran's eye for detail.

Too bad Utilitarianism had to fuck shit up. With these greedy fucks, the American Wilderness was viewed as vast and exhaustible. Nature a commodity. Short term visions like this exploitive capitalism did not have a well-developed intellectual fanbase.

Handi, we have the NAACP, the Rainbow Coalition, BLM and the AFLCLGBTQIA+ lighting up the switchboard after your statement. Oh shit, now the AAPI people are calling. What do we tell them, Handi? 😟

Three tablespoons of ‘em in my Oikos every morning. They’re gross.

Bob Marshall founded the Wilderness Society and was instrumental in the development of wilderness ideals and the passing of the wilderness Act. And yes, he was an educated white man pandering to other wealthy, educated white men. PHD and Chief of Forestry (1933) in the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Rich white privilege before it was a thing.
