Texas fans ... what are you hearing about Ewers?

Comments were made during the recruitment that indicated the Mannings were fine with a red shirt and felt it will help Arch get adjusted. I got the impression their plan all along was for him to reshirt from a development standpoint. They are playing the long game with the kid.
If that's the case, I get it for now. Do you think they're gonna be OK slowplaying it to a point where he sits his first 2 years though?

Maalik Murphy will be the Texas starting QB the rest of the year, even when Ewers is healthy enough to play. Bookmarket.

Wouldn't be the most shocking thing I've ever heard.

I think it depends on where he is in development and his comfort level. Even coming in and starting as a redshirt freshman is a heck of lot of pressure and they aren't going to want him fed to the wolves so they just might be ok with it.

People were saying Maalik was being replaced as soon as Arch committed.. Well he's getting his shot now and people still seem to focus more on Arch lol

OL gotta step up even if they are hurting on the injury front.. Brooks and Baxter need to carry this offense

Not sure you can call that being fed to the wolves when you're supposed to be an elite prospect. CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, etc. all were ready to go in their 2nd year. Not many highly drafted QBs aren't.

Arch starting now in the middle of the season on a team ranked 7 in the country who is looking to win out to get to the CCG game.. is throwing him out to the wolves, he hasn't even had a snap in clean up duty (hell MM barely has).

Arch will be battling for the starting role for next year beginning this spring.

That's so stupid considering he's likely gone after 3 years, 4 max. The RS is useless for higher end QBs and skill position players.
I think most of it is theater to keep 2 QBs on the roster next year. That maybe be thrown out the window in the next week or 2

From Horns247:

“The most impressive fact about Maalik Murphy to me is that he was first offered by three different offensive coordinators at Texas,” Roach said. “Tim Beck made him the first QB offer in the 2022 class, and Mike Yurcich re-offered as soon as he was hired at Texas. When Steve Sarkisian took over, Murphy was once again a priority target for the Longhorns. Though they once had a commitment from Quinn Ewers and were working to flip him while he was pledged to Ohio State, it was clear that Murphy possessed tools that each coach loved.

“One, I think he loves the culture of Texas, the community, you know, the people, everything around it,” Hernandez said of what kept Murphy in Austin. “He’s been excited to be there. He’s kind of changed the way he is. I was there this summer and he picked me up in his car. He was just playing nothing but country music the entire time. He said it’s all he listens to. He was like I love it. He could see I loved it. We’ve been sending each other songs. He’s just really bought in. He really loves it there. Again, the personalty that Maalik has, he’s not one to shy away from competition. There were a lot of opportunities, even coming out of high school going into college, where probably the path seemed smoother to be QB1. He said this program checks the boxes for me and I’m not scared to compete and I’m not going anywhere. He’s a fighter.”

I'm not talking about this year with Arch, I was talking about next year.

Not a Texas fan but I heard he goes more than one way

Fromm was a true freshman when he left the field ahead by 3 in the NC game.

That said, it isn't ideal and you are better off not having to play them. It sure reduces the playbook and the route trees.

If MM plays well, and then in the spring, will be interesting to see if Ach is willing to wait until his third year to play. My guess is he will be.

Texas can lose 1 of the next 4 and still make the conf title game. They need to beat KSU though. Tcu, tech and isu 2-1 will keep them in the driver seat.

As true freshmen, yes I agree. RS freshmen? You've gotta be ready I think.

It sets up perfectly for him starting as a redshirt sophomore, two years to learn the system and then two years on the field and he probably graduates before his senior year and then goes pro.

QBs take a beating and two more years of O-Line development would be a positive for him also. The Mannings are running a marathon not a sprint.
