DisagreeI see it as the Tuck Rule and the Bush Push penalties.
Yes, it was called by the rule book but it is a dumb rule.
Disagree
The rule exists for 2 reasons
1. The fair catch exists to protect returners from getting smoked and part of player safety
2. The invalid fair catch is to prevent the returner from getting and advantage by confusing the coverage team. They're running full speed downfield and hesitation gives returner advantage. You can actually see it in this very return, one of the gophers definitely slows down and holds up (Still plenty to make a play and they bungled it) but he clearly hesitated seeing Dejean wave and not wanting to get a penalty
3. Earlier in the game Dejean drew a fair catch penalty against Nubin when Dejean initiated the contact, I don't think they call if it Dejean (who signaled late) doesn't reach out and shove Nubin. Gophers also had this on their mind, Iowa only needed 20 yards to get into FG range.
I do agree it's got to be gut wrenching to have that over turned on a technicality of a rule
If you still don't like it, that's fine, but I can see why it exists
I'm not going to argue with you, you're being more rationale than a lot of Iowa fans on twitterI have seen where the returner was calling for the punt like an outfielder calling for a pop fly by waving their hand. "I got it! I got it!" Most of the time was HS level. They get the ball and take off running only to realize when whistles blow that they actually did do the fair catch
I think of that when I think of the rule.
