I had just returned from SE Asia and my last hop was on a red-eye flight from LA. I drove to Norman and got home about 7 AM when my phone rang and a buddy told me he had tickets to the game. I was hungry, jet lagged to the nth degree and not about to go to a game where we were just going to beat the shit out of Kansas again. I hung up, laid down and could not fall asleep for the life of me. I called my buddy back and we agreed he'd pick me up and we'd go to the game. I was in a haze walking around Campus Corner and we finally made our way to our seats on the west side of the stadium on about the 30 yard line maybe 30 rows up.........and there in front of me a horror story unfolded. FUMBLE! Again and again and again. Worst game I ever saw in my life. We bumped into my parents after the game and I nearly dropped an F bomb in front of Mom. By the time I got home I was totally gassed. I sat down in my recliner and woke up the next morning promising myself I would NEVER again cheer for Kansas to win a damn thing. To this day if the Jayhawks were playing Red China I'd be cheering for the commies. :sigh:

We also went on to win the National Championship that year.

We dropped from #2 to #6 after losing to Kansas. My Dad nearly had to hog tie me to get me to go to the game the next week at Missouri where we saw Joe Washington score on a two point conversion to pull that game out. Then then we watched OU beat #2 Nebraska the next week and OU went back to #3. I saw us plug away and barely beat Michigan in the Orange Bowl after other teams above us had lost that day. #3 was suddenly the National Champions. What a rollercoaster ride. Unfortunately we've had waaaaaay too many disappointments over the past 20 years at OU but it's good to remember when we used to pull seasons out and win the Big One.
