Meh, USC had good defenses under Pete Carroll and were putting up points at a pretty fast pace as well with Norm Chow, then Kiffin and Sark. But he was smart enough to let his OC's handle the offense and they recruited both sides of the ball.

To be fair to Riley and Grinch, the defense hadn't exactly been stellar under Helton, so they were dealing with an almost empty cupboard on that side of the ball when they came in.

I think one of the main problems with Grinch is he couldn't decide if he wanted an aggressive, attacking defense or a defense that outschemes opponents...he tried to switch back and forth and ended up with neither.

They also need more size on the front 7. Bear Alexander and Solomon Byrd are a good start, but that's only 2 guys.

My favorite (and less publicized) move from today was elevating Taylor Mays from Defensive Analyst to On Field Assistant working with the safeties.

Mays was a 3x All-American safety during the Pete Carroll era who loved to hit people.

Hopefully he can get the current safeties to play like that.

Mays was a helluva a player coming out of HS in Washington and at SC. Thought he’d be more then what he was in the nfl.
