I will never forget being in Montreux, Switzerland - which is about as idyllic a place as one can get ... Lake Geneva, snow-capped Alps across the lake, a warm breeze blowing through the palm trees along the promenade, a profusion of flowers, aaaaaaaaand the public restrooms with holes in the floor. At least the places you're supposed to put your feet make it less likely women will pee on their feet, but still. I couldn't quite reconcile such a beautiful place, and Switzerland is maybe the most pristine place I've ever seen in terms of cleanliness ... everywhere ... with those public restrooms.
