Nebraska, Texas, SEC folks.. Some pre season fat to chew on

Joe Castiglione at the end...........''It's the Gift that keeps on Giving''

This is my favorite part.

"The Texas football program made its fame in the now-defunct Southwest Conference. In the 1970s and 80s, the Southwest Conference was utterly lawless, in a less sophisticated sort of way compared to now.

Back then, it was alleged and assumed that all of the SWC schools were giving players cars, cash, girls, "tutors," and other inducements. SMU was the most famous transgressor, getting the NCAA Death Penalty in 1987. Eric Dickerson, who was an SMU star, took a gold Pontiac Trans Am gift from Texas A&M and kept it after signing with SMU. Dickerson said that when he left SMU for the NFL, he took a pay cut. He wasn’t kidding."

What the old SWC did was against the rules. Now schools can do the same because there are no rules. In fact, it seems the settlement will make it a requirement to give players "cars, cash, girls" etc or less sexy types of compensation.

Here's a couple of more:

"One of the great mysteries in college football history is why the Big Eight schools surrendered so meekly. It was not their league that turned into ashes over lawlessness. It was a shameful, unconditional capitulation."
Any of you land thieves, corn aggies or @78Cyclones know if this was true and if so, why the other 8 did allow it? I really don't remember anything except the Prop 48 one being a big issue. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention because I was pissed off that Texas torpedoed the SWC.

"Enjoy your new home and circumstances, Bevo. You made the bed you are about to crap in."

We haven’t been associated with Texas for over a decade now. Don’t know why we’re included in the thread title. Any husker fan still holding a grudge needs help. Texas certainly isn’t to blame for the last 6 years.

From the Big 8 point of view, it was an opportnity to add TVs and an excellent recruiting state to the league. I loved the old Big 8 (which was strong in both Football and MBB pre-merger), but it would not have survived standing pat. Ironically, in the old Big 8, Iowa State was the only school that did not recruit prop 48 athletes, so they were an ally of Texas' on that matter. FWIW, I really like the new new new Big XII and am looking forward to a fun football and basketball season!

I’d like to point out the over-arching theme here that:

IT DONT FUCKING MATTER. RUN IT, CHANGE IT, RUN FROM IT, BITCH ABOUT IT. THERE IS ONE CONSTANT.

No grudge here either. I wouldn't call it a "grudge" why I don't want to date any of my ex girlfriends but more of a "been there, seen that crazy and don't want any more" situation. The rest of the SEC is already feeling the drama those queers in Austin bring.

Man I don't know. U-O sounds really weird. Someone needs to teach your mascot that you are O-U.

I was thinking the only reason they would have let Texas "get their way" was because they figured such as you described. The old "We really don't like it but if it turns out to benefit us, we'll let them do it and look like the bad guy."

No, no, no, no, no. You haven't been paying attention. Everything is Texas' fault.

Doesn't mean I can't still hate them.

You coming up to Lincoln at the end of the month?
Nah, haven’t traveled in several years. Although it would be easier now than when I lived in EP. Maybe we’ll have a decent enough team one of these years where I want to.

Hey, hey. Let a guy dream. Hope springs eternal!

So….our deal with the PAC fell through due to a mommyship fueled “network”. WHEW!!! Dodged a bullet with that one!

Seems like jexas runs things while OU wins things. I like that scenario….don’t y’all?

Well, it seems pretty clear the trajectory of the PAC would have been a lot different.
