Had an old family friend who played for Arkansas back in the late 60's. He claimed to have played for 6 years, under 2 different names. He always maintained that the money was too good to move on.This is my favorite part.
"The Texas football program made its fame in the now-defunct Southwest Conference. In the 1970s and 80s, the Southwest Conference was utterly lawless, in a less sophisticated sort of way compared to now.
Back then, it was alleged and assumed that all of the SWC schools were giving players cars, cash, girls, "tutors," and other inducements. SMU was the most famous transgressor, getting the NCAA Death Penalty in 1987. Eric Dickerson, who was an SMU star, took a gold Pontiac Trans Am gift from Texas A&M and kept it after signing with SMU. Dickerson said that when he left SMU for the NFL, he took a pay cut. He wasn’t kidding."
What the old SWC did was against the rules. Now schools can do the same because there are no rules. In fact, it seems the settlement will make it a requirement to give players "cars, cash, girls" etc or less sexy types of compensation.
Here's a couple of more:
"One of the great mysteries in college football history is why the Big Eight schools surrendered so meekly. It was not their league that turned into ashes over lawlessness. It was a shameful, unconditional capitulation."
Any of you land thieves, corn aggies or @78Cyclones know if this was true and if so, why the other 8 did allow it? I really don't remember anything except the Prop 48 one being a big issue. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention because I was pissed off that Texas torpedoed the SWC.
"Enjoy your new home and circumstances, Bevo. You made the bed you are about to crap in."
Didn’t Criner recruit non-qualifiers? They were the same guys that other Conference teams recruited but they were academically ineligible. Next thing you knew they were at Iowa State playing.Ironically, in the old Big 8, Iowa State was the only school that did not recruit prop 48 athletes, so they were an ally of Texas' on that matter.
Not sure. Perhaps, it was a result of the Criner (Cheat and Lose) Error that led ISU to go the non-Prop 48 route.Didn’t Criner recruit non-qualifiers? They were the same guys that other Conference teams recruited but they were academically ineligible. Next thing you knew they were at Iowa State playing.

It’s not the pussy Big 12 anymore. Hope those Texas fans can handle it and don’t go crying to conference commissioner about it.

FYP.No grudge here either. I wouldn't call it a "grudge" why I don't want to date any of my ex girlfriends but more of a "been there, seen that crazy and don't want any more" situation. The rest of the SEC is already feeling the drama those steers in Austin bring.
That’s some major nut swinging right there….found the cap for me to wear around Ann Arbor in a few weeks
