Preseason AP Poll

Yeah, I like them too. I think Lashlee is a pretty good coach, and really good with QB's. Look what he did with TVD. Miami nosedived offensively the year after he left. SMU will be good on offense, and last year they were surprisingly very good defensively. They do have a good schedule too. Road games are Nevada, UL, Stanford, Duke and UVA. Those latter 3 might be the worst 3 teams in the ACC.
Yeah I'm thinking even more that they could crash the CFP. If they beat FSU I would even say 11 wins seems highly likely. And honestly, that might not even be that egregious of an upset pick.

I think it is a way to make the CCGs relevant.
But then doesn't it also make the regular season more useless? If a random B1G/SEC team goes 11-1 but doesn't make the CCG, I don't see why a 10-2 team from the Big 12/ACC with a CCG win over a likely lower end ranked team should get the bye over them because their conference is bad.

Yeah that game with FSU is the massive one. It's a really good spot for them too with it being their first league game. Atmosphere will be electric. Couldn't have asked for a better spot for that game.

Having them at home, no less, that could be an incredible way for SMU to set the tone for themselves as a league contender. If they can be successful this year and make the CFP, we could see a new contender in the conference moving forward. They have the resources for it, that's for sure, and Lashlee has a chance to do something we haven't seen in decades down there.

Agreed 100%. If the point of the 12 team playoff is to get the best 12 teams, it shouldn't be a boost for you if you aren't that great but your conference sucks. Now if they're like 6th or even 7th, it's not so bad, but being ranked outside of the top 10 should disqualify you from getting a bye.
I think we are way in the minority. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for this new playoff. And one of the things I like the most is the possible rewards for playing a tough schedule and having/winning meaningful games late in the season.

I also love getting first round games at home. I have no problem with the 4+1 getting in. But the four best teams should be rewarded the most, then the next four and the last four rewarded for just getting in!

Championships count. Those 11-1 teams are still in the playoffs with the other no-championship teams.

I get that, but why should they have a lower seed when they're the better team?

One proved to be a Champion and the other didn't.

The rankings are just rewarding championships. The only way to "know" who is the best team is to play round robin.

I think you'd agree that not all champions are the same. Winning a conference with no other top 15 teams isn't the same as being an 11-1 top 10 team with 2-3 other teams in your conference ranked ahead of you. I have no problem with all the conference champions being part of the CFP, but winning a CCG only because you're arbitrarily a part of a weaker conference seems to negate the whole point of actually choosing who the bests teams are.

I'm with you on SMU. I can see them hitting 10 wins this season. They're well balanced and return a lot of talent, and it helps that their schedule is definitely on the easier side.

They definitely seem on the way up.

I was surprised to see a stat that they have lost their last five in a row to Power teams.

Your "reward" as the 4 seed is losing a home game and getting smoked by the 5 seed

See, the playoffs are not about finding out who is the best team, but about winning a Championship. I would prefer a 16 team playoff, no byes, but here we are.

USC at 23? Wonder what that would be if there still was a PAC-12. Hate to say it, but those old PAC-12 teams may regret the new reality.

USC finished unranked despite having the #1 overall pick at QB and playing in the PAC.

Game is the same. Put up or shut up.

Yep. Last win was over TCU in '21. Lost to TCU and Maryland in '22 and OU, TCU an BC last year.

Eh, it's a preseason poll. I think USC will be higher in the final rankings.

FSU taking a step back this year. DJ still isn’t a good qb.

Definitely agreed. He had his "breakout year" last year and it still wasn't very good. 10 of his 27 total TDs came against SJSU and Cal. He faced three defenses ranked in the top 25 total defenses nationally (Oregon, UCLA, Utah) and went 47/84 with 690 yards and 4 TD/2 INT combined, not to mention his inexplicably horrible game against Washington's defense that was somewhere around 90th in the nation.
