Tell Me How The Boosters Work...

Oh yeah for sure. With season tickets, I would go to the game, tailgate, drink, take in the scenery, drink some more, watch the game, drink a little more. Have a good time.
Donating to NIL can award loyalty points that can be used for all sorts of things as well.

I'm hearing the term "donor fatigue" more and more. At least from the old guard.
You are going to hear that and a lot more. Imagine being told over and over, “this is the guy, we need a million$”. At some point anyone is going to start asking well what about the last 4 I paid you for that aren’t even here anymore?

Especially if we hit a recession at the end of this year/early next year

To be honest there aren't a lot of 1:1 NIL deals being made out there. If the collective wants to offer $1m then they aren't calling someone and asking for it. They are just looking at their pledged donations and seeing what they have. Sure there are the Phil Knights of the world that are single handedly bankrolling an NIL system, but that's not the case for most. It would lead to way too much bean counting and fatigue like you've said to tie a player to a donor.

I think the effect is going to be the same though

I don't see it being any different than any other donations for facilities or scholarships prior to NIL. You aren't tying your dollar to a specific kid, it's going to the overall department. So even if you have a 4 win year in football, there are still kids that did well and "next year".

We now have 2 pro football leagues. One is a minor league and the other a major league. The thing about this minor league though is that a player absolutely has to play in it for 3 years to have a shot at the majors. We now have a secondary market where guys that have zero shot at ever making it big are trying to maximize earnings in a minor league. College football as we know it is over.

Yes but donors are going to know who gets the big payouts

First off, "boosters'" these days might be the wrong term. But how does it work? And explain it to me like I am 5. Like this is what I am thinking: A very successful businessman graduated from College X. A super pharmacist that starts a company graduated from the same college. So does a tech genius. And others that are/were very successful also graduated from College X.

Now, it is time for an upgrade to facilities, or the hiring of a great coach, or buying out of a sucky coach that needs to be gone. Does the college reach out to these successful financial graduates (boosters?) and say, "Hey, we need a lot of dollars to do such and such." Do these successful graduates care that much about college football? Is that how it works when it gets down to brass tacks? What do these "boosters" get out of it?

I am not trolling. This is one area of the sport that I am lost on.
It's all Ego and bragging rights. Take the SMU situation in the 80s when guys did interviews down the road they admitted they wanted to go to the country club and brag about their team and they had disposable income to help do it.

I agree 100%. But there are some schools with donors that don't mind throwing $1million away at all. They'll just do like I do at the craps table when I lose my first buy and reach for a few more hundreds. They just reach for a few more millions! They are bound to hit on one eventually.

We have basically the exact same size endowment.
