One key thing about fixing the dog's diet is: make sure EVERYONE in your household is on board with the plan.

Every dog my parents have had over the last 20 years have been small dogs and everyone of them have been fat. My mother keeps them on a strict diet and walks them every day, but my father is constantly undermining my mother's proper dog care with what he refers to as "love nibbles".

Kids & house guests too. Gotta make sure the dog isn't sniping human food if a kid drops a meatball on the floor or slyly feeding the dog food the kid doesn't want to eat.
