Transfer Portal

So does this open up mid-season transfers? A guy could play for a different team each week if he wanted?

WTF is going on here? College football moving closer and closer to being dead.

Right or wrong, I think it's hilarious that it took so long for someone to find the loophole that drags this part out......

"The agreement, a Big Ten-issued template form, binds Lucas — and all players who sign — to that specific school and grants that school a player’s non-exclusive rights to use and market their name, image and likeness. The agreement prohibits the player’s rights to be used by any other school while permitting him or her to sign outside marketing agreements, according to those familiar with the template.
Breaking the agreement could trigger litigation from Wisconsin onto Lucas and/or Miami.

NCAA rules do not allow an athlete to compete for more than one school in the same season.

This also means that Miami coaches were not allowed to talk to him, nor he them prior to the transfer. If they did so, tampering rules were violated.

It's not what the athlete can't do, it's what they can do.

NCAA rules do not prevent a student-athlete from unenrolling from an institution, enrolling at a new institution and competing immediately." - Thy Lord NCAA

His business with Wisconsin is it's own civil matter.

Playoff transfers! Can't wait. Actually, why wait? Bama, can we borrow Ryan Williams? Texas, Barron want a quick pay day instead of sitting at home? scUM how bout your kicker?

I think the NCAA has zero intention of fixing this situation. They saw their days were numbered and decided to burn the sport we love to the ground.

BiG really backing WI on this is strange.. He did come to an agreement, but if he didn't sign anything, they should have released him into the portal the way he wished.. they are treating him like he's their property. Just think this is a dumb hill to stand on when there are bigger things needing more attention to.

I learned that the Big 10 literally has a NIL revenue sharing 'template' available for it's teams. This kid signed one a month ago stating Wisconsin gets a piece of his NIL revenue wherever he goes for the next 2 years.

I wonder if the hold-up has been that he got a wad of cash up front and they wanted it back before letting him portal?

He signed a Big 10 template. Basically a form.

The specifics of the info filled into said template weren't given.

Here ya go.

There's also a supposed family (health) hardship issue here that he was unaware of when he signed the template. That makes it even more questionable why Wisconsin wouldn't sign his portal documents.
Hardship was always something I'd bend for when it came to employees.

I'd like to see the template.
I personally think he got a big payday and they want it back or they'll enforce the template for his two years at Miami. .

his agent/representative is adamant that he did not receive any money for him to even return back to WI, FWIW

You are incorrect.

Finally, Council members voted to prohibit student-athletes from competing for two different schools in championship season in the same academic year.

Unless he's been competing for Wisconsin basketball, he will no longer be competing in athletics for them in this academic year (2024/2025).

Come August he'll be competing for Miami. i.e. A new academic year (2025/2026).

To go a step further he won't be competing for two different teams in a season. There is the 2024 season (Wisconsin) and a 2025 season (Miami).

Am I missing something here?

Is this you responding to me?

I was commenting specifically on the notion that a player could transfer mid-season and compete for 2 different schools in the same calendar year/season.

In other words, he can't compete for Wisconsin then half-way through the season transfer to Miami and compete there immediately.

Correct. I thought we were discussing the Wisconson player going to Miami without using the portal.

We are, in a sense. A player can't play, transfer mid-season and play immediately for the new school. It has nothing to do with the portal (portals aren't open during the season anyway, except the bowls in football).

For instance, Ohio State recruited 2 tackles who played football this year for other teams. Those guys came through the portal, but even if they did not, they can't play for Ohio State in the playoffs because they played for another team in the same championship season.

The real question is "What is the definition of 'play'? If he was on the team, attended practices but never got into a game, does that mean he didn't 'play'?

You agree the former Wisconsin player can practice at Miami for spring/fall ball and play in their 2025 games tho right?

No, there is a rule that you can only play for one school in the same season.
