Bookie:
$ 40,000.00
Set in 1857 Utah territory. Netflix.

Just watched the first episode.
Cinematography, dialog, acting, plot: all pretty overwrought.

Almost through the third episode. It’s pretty bad. It’s like someone wanted to make a “gritty western drama,” but forgot the actual good writing part.

I am through 2 episodes. Meh

It's kind of like the Revenant. After awhile you have seen enough gore

It was a brutal period tho?

I mean gore just for gore, I am not really a fan of, but if it's part of the TRUTH, I think it adds to the experience.

The casting of Young doe...

Gotta admit that was pretty awesome.

Indeed, very brutal, I just didn't like this series as much as I was hoping.

I would recommend reading a Life Wild and Perilous by Robert Utley or Throne of Grace by Clavin and Drury

Haven't bothered...they lost me at "Mormon."

Kevin Costner's Horizon was pretty crap too.

Rather watch 1883 again.
Horizon was another ego piece by Costner. Couldn't get through it and I LOVE westerns! I have revisited the 1923 series. At first I didn't like it but gave it another go. New season coming in Feb

It just wasn't any good. And while it had some pretty good actors on board, the acting itself felt off. Almost forced. Three hours long and then, oh...watch five minutes of fast-forwarded storyline where you can guess what happened.

Why? I mean, I dislike Mormons as much as the next guy, but the history is still interesting af imo.
Yes, and it doesn't paint them in any sort of good light either.

Watched it last night. Filmed well, acted well, but got was it disjointed and nonsensical. It was like 3-4 different stories that never came together and never really made sense. Also, WTF was that last 5-10 minutes? A fast forward through events? A preview of upcoming parts? Overall very disappointing

The acting didn't feel weird to you? Like forced?

I think most were fine, Coster was well Coster so the same as he is in anything, Worthington was fine, Danny Huston was fine as always, even Luke Wilson was fine though he didn't really fit the part IMO. The one asshole that Costner shot did seem overdone though. I think if the story had flowed better, the acting would've seemed better across the board. Not sure if the issue is editing or what but it was very choppy.

I read somewhere that it was supposed to be a mini-series (like Lonesome Dove) on HBO but I guess that fell through. I think it would work better as a mini series instead of a movie in 4 parts.

Wants to be gritty, but drives into melodrama. Tone changes constantly. More pulp than grit.
4/10
