Yes, that's typically how it works in the context of what we're talking about. Michigan beat the #2 and #11 teams to end the season.

But, at least both teams had to win three games against other playoff teams to get there. So they totally “earned it” imho.

Took me a couple of minutes to prove this wrong. Auburn in 2003 finished unranked and beat at the time of game #7 Tennessee and #7 Arkansas.

2003 Auburn beat Alabama and Wisconsin to end the season? 2004 Auburn finished undefeated and very much ranked

By this "at time of the game" rule then Georgia Tech did it this year. finished unranked and beat (at the time) #10 FSU and #4 Miami.

I think the term you were searching for is "mulligan". Ohio State's road to the championship was anything but a gimme ("gimmy").

And i wholeheartedly disagree. There is always the chance a lower seed goes on a run like Ohio State did this season. That's exactly what makes March Madness so great. In the BCS system you never actually know if the 2 best teams have been selected. It's all based on opinion and "strength of schedule" when schools play vastly different schedules with very few if any common opponents. And even comparing common opponent games is a fallacy.

A tournament bracket is far better for deciding a champion. Relying on regular season only is only good for maintaining the importance of going undefeated and encouraging cupcake OOC matchups.

Florida did it in 2002 as well, they beat Georgia who was #5 at time of game and Tennessee who was #4 at time of game.

I'm not sure what crack you're smoking but Florida very much lost to Michigan in 2002 to end the season. We're not talking about during the entire season, we're talking about in their final games. To end the year.

"Oregon was the best team" shit really cracks me up. The "best team" doesn't lose their 1st playoff game by 3 scores.

I bet MnB had no problems with the so called "mulligans" Bama has gotten in the past.

Afraid you are going to have to write out these rules you are applying. Sounds like they have to be unranked at the end of the season, beat two top-11 teams (ranked at game time), and not lost to Michigan in the last game of the year?

Though I could see where this would be confusing and misunderstood as throughout the season, but was meant as finish the season (final two games) with two final wins over top 15 opponents.
