Trivia for the masses

OK Too tough.

It was Vida Blue in 1971. Sure, he won the MVP for his pitching but he was a switch hitter.

Gonna be hard to convince me a that an elite everyday player isn’t more valuable than an elite pitcher that only sees action every 5 games
Back in the game-winning-RBI days, I developed a responsibility index. Pitchers showed out high on the index.

An elite starter is more valuable on a per game played basis, but I’d take the guy that takes the field every game.

I also don’t think a reliever should ever win the Cy Young either

Every game has a key player that you came credit with a greater share of a win. Even the best hitters have a hard time matching a 33 start stud pitcher.

Blue had 39 starts that year, 24 complete games, and WAR of 9. The highest hitter had a WAR of 7.4. No contest.

WAR isn’t the end all be all. What was Blue doing to win the games he didn’t play?

I understand your argument but any pitcher that failed as much as the best hitter would not be in the show long.

WAR is just a stat. I wish I had my old formula and the time to do the research. I assure you that the season Blue had in '71 is MVP worthy.

I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t like it

A starting pitcher touches the ball, what, 300 times a game?

The catcher, maybe 200?

The two most important positions in baseball.

(I'm counting all touches)

Agreed. And catchers very under represented when it comes to MVPs IMO, and bWAR vastly undervalues catchers
