Coaching Carousel

We'll see what happens. I didn't think Willard was fantastic at Seton Hall, but ... he was there for a long time and generally kept players in the program.

At least we took a coach away from the B1G instead of vice versa.

He was quick to tell anyone who would listen how much better things were in the Big East, the league he had just left after 12 seasons at Seton Hall. The scheduling, the travel, the emphasis on college basketball above all else.

Many Maryland boosters and athletic department staffers were already used to dealing with similar complaints from Mark Turgeon, Willard's predecessor, who frequently complained about the school's decision to leave the basketball-fabled Atlantic Coast Conference for the Big Ten in 2014.

This whole thing is pretty fascinating. I do wonder if the B1G didn't add the P12 schools, if he would have stayed? Probably not, but him complaining about the schedule and travel issues, does make me wonder.
He was gone regardless he wanted more money, wanted additional resources to do what he wanted with the team and he wanted more NIL. Most of all he wanted the basketball program to be the number one priority.

He needs to be in the Big East where he will be the big dog and there is no football.

I’m not in the know about Maryland at all. But I do recall the main reason they left the ACC was because the athletic department was in a huge financial hole. They felt like they needed BIG money to survive. If they are still in that situation, then he may have an argument. If they aren’t still hurting financially, he has a point and Maryland needs to get their shit together.

But he may also be viewing this through a scarcity mentality instead of an abundance mentality.

The Final Four teams all have football programs as did the other four in the Elite Eight. Seems those eight are doing just fine having football teams.

I’m sure Maryland has made a lot strides on their debt. Their new problem is finding the money for NIL because boosters only have so much cash they have to figure out what goes in non NIL buckets.

That is why the revenue sharing model is being pushed so hard because what they’ve created through NIL isn’t sustainable.

Pretty ironic situation all around for maryland

On one hand they end up with a coach sketchier and slimier than Willard

But on the other hand, for as long as Buzz sticks around they objectively upgraded their coach.

So it actually works out pretty well

Yeah, pretty much. Buzz has a much better track record.

I do wonder how A&M will go after now? They have a shit ton of money, so nothing would surprise me. Wonder if they could lure McCasland away from Tech? All the good mid major coaches have already switched for the most part.

Marquette, Maryland, A&M and VT could be considered comparable programs and he certainly hasn't had any more success by job hopping.

I think he's one of those dudes who job hops for salary

Yup. Like I said he’s sketchy. In it for buzz(which is fine to do no doubt) no matter how often he says. He’s gonna be successful cause guy can coach. But he’s always gonna chase more money and run from any adversity whether it’s down year or internal.

I think he will be damn solid at Maryland for as long as he sticks tho. He’s proven to get to the tourney and can at least do second weekends

Maryland is gonna be the closest comp to Marquette. And he also did great relative to the absolutely garbage standards of VT.

yep. Maryland and Marquette are a clear step or two above Texas A&M and Virginia Tech. at least historically. NIL era is just weird.

Rumor mill around here (for what it’s worth) is Beard at Ole Miss is being thrown around for aTm. Buyout is 4mm which isn’t horrible in todays market.

That's what I've seen as well. Would be a great hire. It's a weird carousel. Willard leaves to go to Nova, MD upgrades, at least IMO, then if A&M gets Beard, they've upgraded too IMO.

Ford you got a good man and a heck of a basketball coach. I know Buckyhe coached high school locally before taking the Stamford job. I don’t know anyone that has a bad thing to say about him, pretty much universally liked by everyone.

Hopefully he doesn't pull a Dana Altman at Arkansas when he see's those dudes grabbing their nuts wearing milkman outfits.

The best job in the Big South just opened up
