Somehow, Minecraft turned things around from that heavily-disliked first trailer and tunneled through poor reviews like they were sand to get a huge opening weekend box office:
- biggest so far this year, beating out Captain America 4: Brave New World
- largest of all time for a video game adaptation, beating out The Super Mario Bros. Movie

I doubt there's anyone on HN in the movie's demo. From what I know of Minecraft, it taps into the same creativity and imagination that Lego does. I'm not surprised it's a huge success.

Yeah, Minecraft has been an extremely popular video game for kids/teens for over 10 years. Shows you how out of touch some of the Hollywood press/movie reviewers are thinking it would flop. The movie isn't meant to be some great story, its basically just a meme and joke references for all the kids/teens that play the games to have fun with.
My wife and kids saw it. Kids enjoyed it. Not surprised it's doing well. To expand on @wildturkey's statement, my wife's cousin is like late-20s/early 30s, and he grew up with Minecraft as the computer game he'd play with friends.
So it's got a pretty big target market and it misses a lot of people born before like 1990.

My almost 6yo is wrapped up in Minecraft right now. He enjoyed the parts of the movie where they were actually in Minecraft land, but he had a terrible time staying engaged during the middle of the movie.
