i think that's just because outside of what he was taking he was also putting in the work. he saw that brady anderson bull shit, saw the hype the year sosa, mcgwuire, and griffey were chasing the record at the break and said, shit maybe i need to look into this. i don't know how widespread it was, as i'd rather not now, this guy leaned into it and became a baseball god where others had moderate success. the entire era is tarnished, but the home runs are what brought baseball back after the strike. and a few years after that he emerged as so much better than those that used before. i'm just saying, it was an era of ped users and when he came on board, he was sooooooooo fucking better than anyone else.
