Go with a set of stainless steel pots. The Costco Kirkland brand is outstanding.

Spin on the knife thing: Get her an electric knife sharpener.

Otherwise your gifts won't cut it.

we don't have costcos around here

They have their 10 pc set for $200 right now. Not sure if that's a sale or regular. I don't think I've ever handled them to see how they feel, but they look decent on their site.

I'll check on the Calphalon stuff later when I get home. I haven't checked any of their stuff yet. I would get her an expensive set of knives if she would get her money's worth out of it, but I don't think she will. Plus i'd be fucking pissed if I bought a $300 set of knives and one of her dogs fucking chewed up the handle or some shit.
If you want to buy her three good knives (because that's all you really NEED, the rest are nice to have), you get a good chef's knife (6-8" or a santoku), a paring knife and a serrated knife.

Don‘t you also need a stabbing knife, or do you repurpose one of those three?

I think she wants to replace the knife block she has on her counter, so I guess I need to get the whole set.

Are there any specific traits you reckon I should look for when shopping for them?

Need a cleaver too. Though those can be had for $10-20, and aren't designed to be pretty.

We have a set of Sabatiers:

Was a wedding gift but pretty sure it was less than 100 bucks. Also came with 6 serrated steak knives. They came with a block, doesn't look exactly like this one but can't find ours:

if you can get ones with a full tang in the price range you're looking for, I'd jump on that. They are stronger and more balanced, but really, I'd listen to your work friend. Sounds like yer ma is more of a casual cooker so a stainless set in the $100 range can probably be found. Some blocks are self-sharpening and that might be helpful for her. I have no experience with them though.

I always wondered what you looked like.

I would like a cleaver, but I'm not sure why. What do you generally use it for?

Paring knives are nice & pointy. Perfect for stabbies. Same with most chef's knives. I don't recommend the santoku though. And serrated is just messy. It's like shooting someone in the gut with a sawed off at close range. 🤮

so you deprioritize all the unfun stuff like chirruns, wifes, jobs and push me to the top of the list :D
I just meant, "I'm eatin' a apple right now..."
