R.I.P to the GREATEST HR HITTER OF ALL TIME. Hammerin Hank

I love Babe Ruth but the stats mean next to nothing ... both leagues were watered down by bigotry, and they was exhibition games.
i'm not advocating that these stats be added to Ruth's record, but it weakens the "but Ruth only played against white players" argument.

In the end, unless the MLB puts an official asterisk next to Bonds' HR record, he'll go down in history as the HR king.

I think Bonds is an arrogant asshole, but he is the HR king *No Asterisks*

fwiw, Babe Ruth played 16 exhibition games against negro league teams and he absolutely dominated them

AB - 55
1B - 11
2B - 2
3B - 0
HR - 12
BA - .455
SA - 1.145

It's really not close....he is the best MLB player of all-time

Guys in his day just picked up a wooden bat and would swing. People talk about how pitchers are better nowadays and yes to a degree they are even though there were great pitchers in every era but now these guys have analytics, all kinds of different methods to get an advantage and ways of studying...it goes both ways. Batters have great training facilities, dieticians, strength coaches, analytic guys, etc. So in the end it evens out....most just don't want to admit. Now, baseball is unlike any sport imo where the generation/era doesn't matter.
Imagine Walter Johnson or Bob Feller in this era? They were throwing close to 103 back then with not even close to the advantages they have nowadays.

Babe Ruth is the greatest player to ever pick up a bat and it really isn't close in my mind.

762 HR's in 9847 AB's and he had to hit against pitchers who were on PEDs

It's too bad that Bonds was such a petty, jealous dooshbag. He was well on his way to top 5 all-time status when he weighed 185lbs, but he decided to get on Victor Conte's chemical muscle mass program when Sosa and McGwire started wacking 60-70 HR's a season. He ended up looking like a caricature and losing the precious few morsels of good will and credibility he ever had.

You should consider how each player did in relation to other players of their time, Ruth hit more home runs than other teams did and Bonds is one of the greatest players of all time but he is the home run champ only because of the roids. I am and always will be a huge fan of Hank and Bonds for that matter but Ruth is and always will be the home run champ and it has nothing to do with his race or the race of the people he played against.

If you look at the greatest pitchers of all time since 1947 a very high percentage of them are white so did that really make much difference? I believe Fergie Jenkins has the most wins all time for a black pitcher, I believe he Gibson and Sabathia are the only black pitchers with 250+ wins. 70 years and three...

Even if you're saying that blacks can hit but can't pitch and one actually concedes that point, wouldn't that still mean there would be better hitters in the league and the gap between Ruth and the rest of the league's batters that you tout in the first paragraph would shrink?

Evaluating it is not just about the top end of things though. It's about depth as much as it is the top stars. Relievers (and their roles) would be a factor too... no one believes that Nick Anderson is a "better pitcher" than Max Scherzer but batters have significantly better results against Scherzer than they do against Anderson.

Also yes, I probably should have picked a black reliever for the example even though it's not the point ;)

Well and if Babe Ruth ever crowded the plate like Bonds was able to with his padding he would’ve been drilled in the head when he didn’t wear a helmet. Comparing eras is hard, but one thing no one can ever take away from Hank was that he was most durable players in history and his play didn’t significantly drop off like a lot other guys that played in as many games like as in one day his just turned into an old guy that couldn’t play anymore.

Huh? The guy cheated every day from the mid-1990s until he retired. His record is meaningless; Hank Aaron is the HR king.

I watched the 30 for 30 episode about McGwire and Sosa. It was hilarious how many times it showed them hitting homers over Bonds' head.

Sad to see the steroid era nearly wipe out that all time top 10 I had memorized as a kid.
the 80's and 90's were so quiet with just Reggie and Schmidt getting on the list.

My earliest sports memory is watching him hit the record breaking homerun. I was 11 years old, visiting a friend house. I don't remember what we were doing, but his dad hollered for us to come into the living room.
"History is about to be made. You kids should watch this."
I'm glad he called us in.

That was also the first time I saw a colored TV.
