In most cases, being fat is a choice and having a mental illness is not, so I give much more of a pass to those with mental illnesses.
Now, I do think there are a lot of misdiagnoses and pills are way, way, way over prescribed.
I also tend to think there's a difference between wearing mental illness as a badge of honor and just trying not to be ashamed of it.
I've watched my brother struggle with clinical depression all his life. Only now, in his 50's, has it seemed like he's finally less ashamed of his depression, but I'd never say he wears it as a badge of honor. He'd give anything to be different than he is.
I do draw a line at those diagnosed with mental illnesses who refuse to do anything about it, then use it as an excuse for doing fucked up things, even more so when it comes to committing crimes. If someone is mentally ill and hasn't been diagnosed, that's one thing, but if there has been a diagnosis, they do nothing about it, break the law, then go the whole, "poor me, I'm crazy," fuck that. They should get no special treatment by the courts.
There are people out there w legit mental illnesses. Then there are people out there who just want to vape and surf the Internet all day so they use any reason to get diagnosed with whatever and take 11 months off from work while getting paid. Can’t work but they can go camping and go on vacations etc...because they’re “depressed”. Sure.
