The electrical grid is being pushed to the limit with this cold system.

I read earlier today that Texas had 2.6 million customer affected by power outages. And that their power grid was independent from the rest of the US
I have a friend in Texas who was telling us some of it is to conserve power (happening in Kansas City, too), i.e. shut down part of the grid for a little bit to save energy then shut down another part after and so on and so on.

In theory. My shits been off for 18 hours

I’ve driven the Metroplex roadways.

Those fuckers are nuts.

If there is any precipitation falling from the sky, hang on St. Christopher.

...and yeah, they shut off our power for an hour. House lost 6 degrees of heat in that hour.

Sounds good to me. How can we be the only super power and a couple of cold days wrecks our infrastructure? Rolling blackouts are for 3rd world trash. Not the US of A.
Fuck Texas!!!!

24 hours of no fucking power. 11 fucking degrees here.

this is some bullshit.
At least the downtown skyline is lit

Lived here all my life, see it every winter. Those that moved down here and complain about the slow drivers "in an inch of snow" end up with wrecked cars because they have never heard of black ice.

Damn....we call that spring and fall up here. Just a thought. I would suggest better tires to the dummies and that would solve 90% of the problem. The other 10%...there isn't hope for any time of the year.

Can’t sleep. In the car to keep warm.

praying pipes don’t burst.

praying my mother in law wakes up tomorrow - not sure how cold hypothermia sneaks in. It’s probably 37 in my house right now

Seriously, best of luck to you & yours. (y)

Hopefully everything works out.

this annoys me since I work in the energy industry.

we need to replace the nuclear plants we are shutting down all over the country with some new sort of baseline power.

Is it overall capacity these days driving these kinds of things?

I was just reading up on when we had rolling blackouts down here in the late 80s due to record cold for Florida. They told us it was capacity and demand was just too high. But, after the state looked into it the problem wasn’t capacity, at least on paper. The generating companies were not coordinating right to share demand needs and individually has too much equipment down for maintenance when the demand spike hit. They had no where to turn for additional demand sharing.

100% of the time the accidents in the ice in Texas are northerners who are going to "show you southerners how to drive", without realizing ice ain't snow.

In the north it's usually dumbasses in SUVs or trucks who forget 4WD and AWD are not 4W and AW stop

our electrical grid as a whole needs to be looked at.

and if we have a baseline source, like nuclear or coal has operated as in the past, then the rest of the sources can be cycled. Since nuclear can't really be cycled and runs 24-7, it is a continuous source for the grid to distribute.

Snow has only ever once given me super white knuckle driving, i was working a job out of town and heading back at night (well like 6pm but winter in nebraska its night at 5) and got stuck in a blizzard i lost the road and of course huge ass semis were just doing their stupid shit when im going ultra slow cuz i couldnt see the damn road snow youre more likely to get stuck, much easier to drive smart slow when you need to etc, ice you literally cannot stop if it is good and slick.
I was driving my rear wheeled car in the hills of Maryland during very heavy snow. Back when my ex was in Philly, and I was meeting her for a romantic weekend in a cabin.

Had to gain momentum to make it up hills. Was not a fun drive.

its 44 degrees in mine. Over 24 hours no power. I hope I don’t get too ashy.

You fuckers not have a generator? That was like the first thing I bought when I moved out of my parents house(It’s really essential, well water, no power also means no water)

But driving on ice is awesome. There’s no traffic at all, no cops riding around, and tons of places to sling circles and raise hell. Use the side by side in it now, but it’s fun in a truck too

Even this morning, it rained all last night, 25 degrees this morning, back roads slicker than two eels fucking in a bucket of snot. Guess who left their house at their normal time and made it to work on time while half his coworkers are coming in later.

I live outside city limits and drive country roads to get to work and back. My country roads are all solid sheets of ice covered in random snow drifts. I drive my Jeep Wrangler in 4WD.

Yesterday, I had some asshat in a Ram up my ass all the way down the iciest of icy roads. I wanted to pull over and put a shotgun hole through his passenger side door as he passed me.
