Apparently, this sort of thing is routine in California. Large numbers of illegal immigrants (called "undocumented migrants in the press") somehow pack into SUVs and vans and go from worksites to temporary squats to Mexico and back to worksites again.

I'm interested to see that now the narrative has shifted to claim that the truck struck the SUV, or that the contact was incidental in the accident. There's virtually zero mention of how 25 adult people can fit into a Ford Expedition, that there can't possibly be enough seatbelts and whether such cramming, weight or volume, made the vehicle unsafe to drive. All that seems to matter is that a bunch of people were killed, and that trumps any further concern. I like the blatantly stupid comment by some CBP spokesman: "It was an unusual number of people in an SUV, but we don’t know who they were".

Info like that will likely come out later in the investigation, all that is known now is a bunch of people (likely without ID) were killed. Since the driver is one of them, going to be hard to get info.

This stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum. The sort of apologists who claim that crime happens anywhere, regardless of legal status, neglect to factor in that law enforcement shouldn't have to factor in people who aren't legal residents. No "path to citizenship", no second class status, just come out from the wilderness and identify yourselves, no penalty.
