@douggie I’m a big fan but...

Memorial Day: Celebrated the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is the holiday set aside to pay tribute to those who died serving in the military. ... Veterans Day: This federal holiday falls on November 11 and is designated as a day to honor all who have served in the military.

For those who died for noble causes, I owe you everything.

For those who died for less, you can't be mourned enough. Maybe someday we'll learn.

why do we “celebrate” or pay homage to Robert Duval on Memorial Day?
I saw your post to @douggie on it. I didn’t reply because I didn’t disagree with it. Today is for the fallen. I’ve been conditioned that way. Thanked someone on Facebook a few years ago for their service and my father got on my ass. “I didn’t know it was Nov 11”. Ha.

But, many don’t realize or see it that way and it becomes another day to thank those for their service. Annoys me a little, but I’m not going to change many on it.

Way I see it is.....thanking living vets for their service >>>>> hey, it’s a free day to cookout and sit around.

This might piss old Mel off, but at first blush I thought this was Henry Hill. He did serve, believe it or not. I think it was a deferment of sorts on some charge. It’s in the book, but not the movie.

love the story about your father! Haha. I’m with him. To me the holidays are separate but I agree people often confuse them/don’t know the difference

I’m not “paying homage” but just acknowledging celebs who you may or may not know were in the service. The first post by the OP was of the character Gen’l Patton from that fantastic movie. Did George C. Scott serve or die in service? Why didn’t you ask him of his paying homage? I happen to like George C. Scott. But anyone who has served gets my thanks. My nephew is in basic training right now. Can I not celebrate his service or do I need to wait until he dies?

When I was a kid if was compulsory that we went to the local service at 10am every Memorial Day. 21 guns, Taps, all of that. It’s engrained.

I just gave up a long time ago on trying to correct folks. At the end of the day another day where they are thanking live Vets is better than most things....like the all too standard “today I can make ribs and just sit on my ass....that’s all this means”.

I’ve also seen it pointed out before that on Memorial Day live Vets can be thinking or honoring fallen brothers/sisters they knew....thanking them for their service on this day could be positively reinforcing in the face of what they are dealing with on this day.

In the end....no harm no foul to me.

Probably best to let those that served be the arbiter of all that and relax if you haven't.

Hey, no worries. Changing the date merely to create a three-day weekend has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed a lot to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day. The origins of Memorial Day was actually "Decoration Day". A reference to the practice of decorating soldiers' graves with flowers is an ancient custom. Soldiers' graves were decorated in the U.S. before and during the American Civil War. Many of the origination claims are myths, unsupported by evidence, while others are one-time cemetery dedications. Regardless of origin, by the Civil War's end it had become a national holiday.

Happy Memorial Day.
