What is/was your hometown known for

Home town of Ray Fosse, who Pete Rose ran over in the All Star Game.
Temporary home of Pete Rose while he served his prison sentence.

Marion Federal Penitentiary took the place of Alcatraz.

Other famous inmates: John Gotti was here until he was transferred to a medical unit to die.
Garrett Trapnell, plane hijacker. In 1978 he convinced a woman to hijack a helicopter and have it landed in the prison yard in a planned escape. The helicopter pilot wrestled the gun away from her as he landed in the prison yard and shot and killed her. 7 months later the 17 year old daughter of the dead woman hijacked a plane and had it landed at the Marion airport. She said if Trapnell wasn't released she'd explode the dynamite strapped to her body.

The FBI talked her into surrender and it turned out she had road flares and a doorbell button.

We’re asking what it is known for, not random facts

Mine is known as the region’s most notorious speed trap.

The police department also shuts down at 11

But it’s most famous for an eccentric millionaire that bought every building on Main Street and used them to house his rock collection

I'll just leave this here.

Where I grew up: Deer hunting

Where I live now: EAA

I just looked over the list of famous people from Marion IL and outside of Fosse I have no idea who any of them are and I've lived here my whole life.

So no famous people from here I guess...

Is the prison still open? Thought it was closed.

Jack shit.
It’s gotta be locally famous for something. That’s all my hometown is. I just expect the city slickers from major metropolises to have something more nationally known

Miller Brewery
Harley Davidson
Milwaukee Electric Tool
Usingers

some other bullshit but will leave it at that

The town closest to my hometown has a sign that says birthplace of Claude Akins. Have no idea who that is
