Where I live now(which is still really close to my hometown) is the marble capital of the world. Most of the marble in DC came from north GA mines
 
At the turn of the 20th century this place was one of the foremost textile manufacturing cities in the world. The mill buildings dominated the center of town on both sides of the Merrimack river and at one point in time you could step into a mill building at the Amoskeag Falls and walk South for one mile without stepping outside because all the mills were so close and connected by catwalks and tunnels.
