Gary Indiana was 20.7 miles from where I grew up in Chicago. As young teens, we would hop on the slow moving freight trains from Chicago going east through Gary, and then come back on trains moving the opposite direction.

I wasn't actually in Gary, we went out right by Navy Pier but were out far enough to see all the way down there. I kept saying we're going to surprise dock there.

Imagine growing up knowing that song - my mama loved musicals, so would sing all sorts of songs from various musicals to me in her incredibly endearing tone-deaf way. Then, imagine driving from Louisville to Chicago for the first time, realizing ... whoa, I'll be going through ... Gary, Indiana, Gary Indiana, Gary, Indianaaaaaaa. Then imagine actually seeing the place and the profound disappointment ... like, wait, someone wrote a song about this shithole?!?

I have a friend from Crown Point and i used to joke about buying a block of houses in Gary…at $5k a pop, I could have a lakefront compound!

then he’d gently remind me that I’d also be murdered so I had to nope on that plan. :sigh:
