I won’t even explain the rabbit hole I went down tonight, but it started with air crash history and I ended up here.

First of all….Tumblr still exists. I had no clue.

Second of all, this is actually a pretty good write up of crazy sky jacking stories from that age. It was a bit before my time, though I’m aware as an aviation geek. The only one I’ve spent any depth on was D.B. Cooper.

@dbldwn711….I’m reading that JFK book. As I’m reading these tonight I’m thinking Lee Harvey missed out. Skyjacking for attention and demands to go to Cuba…would have been his thing.

Then I remembered….he ha this idea. Had he not dropped the idea he could have been the OG skyjacker.

Love this one. Anthony Bryant wanted to go to Cuba in 1969. He was convinced Fidel had created a post race utopia (the fuck?)

En route to Havana he robbed passengers, including forcibly taking a briefcase with $1,700 in it from a man. That man was a Cuban agent.

Things didn’t go well for Anthony in Cuba….

Those are some crazy stories!! Hijackings sure have changed.

I thought "sky jacking" was when you wack off in the airplane bathroom

Just the sheer number of people that:

1. Jumped on a 727 or DC-9 and requested to be taken across the Atlantic, or somewhere the plane just couldn’t go.

2. Agreed to changing to a plane that could make the trip, and getting caught or taken out in the switch. Or…..

3. Changed their demands to Cuba. So many for a long time thinking that Cuba = freedom. To their credit, the Cubans rarely welcomed them with anything but hell in a sugar cane gulag. They also mention numerous times that the passengers short stay on the plane in Havana was well hosted by the Cubans. Communists with courtesy.

Oh, and also….the number of younger teens that skyjacked was interesting. Monkey see, monkey do. I skipped school and I’m truant now…..might as well hijack a plane to take me away.

the Criminal podcast covers historical sky jackings from time to time.

feels like when airflight was new and there was less security, this was just a common thing.

Well, yeah, that’s exactly why skyjacking flourished. Many of the excerpts here mention airlines and regulators REALLY dragging their feet on security measures. Balking at how long screening would delay passengers.

If they only know what today was like…..

It amazes me how willing airlines were to fly culprits around, scrounge up all the cash they can on short notice with the hope that it all resolves and they get it back (they did get almost all of it back).

When it was rather non violent actions that’s fine. But, skyjackers got more bold and violent. Still nothing was done. Then the aircrews got pissed off and started fighting back (the scrawny Vietnamese kid who the pilot killed and threw out of the plane must have been something to see). By that point they had to act and screening started in 1973.

The epidemic virtually disappeared from there.

Air flight was new in late 60s early 70s?

That is the period being talked about with regards to skyjackings. Stay on topic

I am on topic. You're the one limiting it to 2 decades
